    ABOUT THE POSITION

    The Clark County Department of Juvenile Justice Services is seeking qualified candidates to apply for Juvenile Detention Specialist I/II (JDS). This position is responsible for the supervision and monitoring of youth’s safety and security. This position is in a 24 hour facility that houses incarcerated youth. The ideal candidate will have experience providing direct observation and supervision of youth in a youth facility.

     

    THIS POSITION REQUIRES THAT YOU MUST BE AT LEAST TWENTY-ONE (21) YEARS OF AGE AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT.

    Juvenile Detention Specialist I: $28.15 - $41.52 Hourly

     

    Juvenile Detention Specialist II: $30.38 - $44.84 Hourly

     

    The Juvenile Detention Specialist I is a training underfill position, upon successful completion of the training program the successful candidate will be non-competitively promoted to Juvenile Detention Specialist II.

     

    This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months at either level or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

     

    Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified applicants to the selection process.

     

    Some positions may be used to fill term Limited-Permanent positions. The selected candidates will be hired for a special project or duties of a limited duration and be required to sign a term of employment letter specifying condition and exact dates of employment. The successful selected candidates will be eligible for benefits during the duration of employment.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience:

    Juvenile Detention Specialist I - Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Education or Special Education, Behavioral Science, Counseling, Early Childhood, Health Science, Child Development, Communication, Public or Business Administration or a closely related field. Experience working with youth is desirable. Professional level experience and/or education that has provided the skills and knowledge necessary to perform all job functions at this level may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

     

    Juvenile Detention Specialist II - In addition to the above, two (2) years of full-time experience providing casework/counseling services, assessments or treatment services to children in a child welfare, social service, juvenile justice and/or residential setting.

     

    All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application.     Working Conditions: Work evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Work under potentially life-threatening emergency conditions. Work in violent, traumatic or highly charged emotional environments. Specified positions may be assigned to a remote work site at high elevation. May be subject to exposure to blood and air borne diseases.

     

    Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver's License.

     

    Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Must complete and submit a personal history statement. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted. Must not have any qualifying offense that violates the standards required by NRS 62B.223 and/or NRS 62G.223.

     

    Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

     

    Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician. Must submit to a tuberculosis testing/screening, per NRS before hire, and every 12 months thereafter. Individuals who are past positive testers are required to provide medical documentation of testing/treatment records.

     

    Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    + Plans, directs, and supervises a group of juvenile detainees in a staff-secure or locked facility on an assigned shift.

    + Maintains sight and sound supervision of youth, monitors family visits, and volunteers.

    + Performs a variety of supervision and security for juvenile offenders detained in a youth camp; supervises daily living, social, educational, recreational and treatment activities.

    + Teaches and models social skills; supervises various programs, such as physical education, work experiences and recreational activities.

    + Use defensive tactics training to prevent youth from harming themselves or others.

    + Provide structure and engage youth in pro-social activities and behaviors.

    + Supports youth in their efforts to develop new social, academic, and vocational skills.

    + Maintains a variety of records and case files; writes incident reports, provides statements, correspondence, and other written materials.

    + Conducts assessments and orientations.

    + Assists with the supervision of juveniles with mental health issues including acute suicidal actions, severe depression, and psychosis; make appropriate referrals to mental health professionals for further evaluation.

    + Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.

    + May assist in the training of new employees and volunteers and direct the work of a shift in the absence of a supervisor.

    + Uses a variety of standard office equipment, including a computer.

    + Drives a county motor vehicle to transport juveniles.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Mobility to work in a typical court, youth camp, detention or public safety setting, including stamina to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time, ability to run and lift while supervising and observing youths, and strength and dexterity of a degree to be able to restrain a youth if necessary; drive a motor vehicle; vision to use standard office equipment and read printed materials including a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
