COMPENSATION:
The current minimum salary for Track Worker is $25.461359 per hour for a 40-hour week increasing to $36.373370 per hour in the sixth year of service. These rates are subject to change as per the Sheet Metal Air Rail Transportation (SMART) Collective Bargaining Agreement. The benefits of this position include but are not limited to, night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, and a comprehensive medical plan and pension plan.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Staten Island Railway Track Workers, under supervision, maintain, install, inspect, test, alter and repair the track and roadway in subway and elevated service under operating conditions. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
• The maintenance installation, inspection, testing, alteration, and repair of rails, frogs, switches, ties, plates, and insulated joints, special work.
• Performing the associated adjusting tamping, welding, grinding, greasing, and cleaning, and perform related work.
• Working outdoors in all weather conditions; lifting and carrying heavy tools, equipment, and materials; working on elevated structures up to 100 feet high.
• Walking along the trackway where tripping hazards are present, distinguishing between different colored lighted signals and flags.
• Driving large spikes in with mauls and pulling spikes out with claw bars; and working in a noisy environment near high-voltage rails and moving trains.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• A High School Diploma or GED.
• Must have a valid driver’s license free from violations and restrictions.
• Must have a valid CDL-B driver’s license free from violations and restrictions. *Note: Successful applicants will be allowed for up to six (6) months from the date of selection to obtain a CDL-B driver’s license.
• Must be able to work as a team and independently.
• Must be able to work various days, shifts and locations.
• This is a safety sensitive position; candidates must be able to pass a medical and lab exam.
PREFERRED/DESIRABLE SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
• Training or experience in welding, mechanics, heavy equipment operation and truck driving.
• Recent experience with construction work where heavy lifting, digging, moving materials, machine work and other relative physical activities are the predominant requirement, preferably in an outdoor environment.
SELECTION METHOD:
Based on evaluation of education, skills, experience, and interview. Candidates may be required to take a technical assessment.
