    The Division of Ecological and Water Resources is seeking to hire a permanent full-time Regional SNA Supervisor located in Windom. This position exists to manage and supervise the Scientific and Natural Area (SNA) program and staff within the South Region (R4) implementing habitat protection, management, development, and restoration on designated SNAs, Native Prairie Bank (NPB) Conservation Easements, and private lands. This position also serves as SNA liaison to partners, local governments, and the public for the purposes of conserving rare species and the state’s natural diversity and garnering support for those activities. This position also assists with division and department plans, operational orders, and other policies and represent or collaborate in department planning, task forces, and teams. Responsibilities include:

     

    + Oversee and implement regional planning on designated SNAs, NPB easements, and other lands of specific interest to SNA to implement department, division, and unit management and protection goals.

    + Oversee and implement regional acquisition, management, development, and outreach projects on designated SNAs, NPB conservation easements, and other lands of specific interest to SNA, and assure that practices follow respective policies and guidelines.

    + Oversee and implement public engagement, outreach, education, and information activities to promote understanding and support for native biodiversity, rare resources, and natural lands protection and management. Manage cooperative projects and cultivate partnerships to fund and implement natural areas protection and enhancement in the region.

    + Conduct administrative tasks necessary to carry out responsibilities according to state standards so that regional SNA operations are smoothly, safely, and efficiently implemented according to plans, policies, fiscal responsibilities, and legal mandates.

    + Direct and supervise the activities and programs of SNA staff so that employees perform assigned job duties in a safe and productive manner.

    + Oversee and support natural area monitoring and compliance to ensure easement stewardship responsibilities are fulfilled, ecological understanding is enhanced, and legal protections are enforced.

    + Requires some fieldwork and travel to oversee field operations.

     

    This position is not eligible for telework at this time and requires reporting to the primary work location.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Two years of professional experience in protecting, restoring, and managing natural resources to conserve native biodiversity, including project planning, administration, implementation, directing personnel, budget management, and reporting.

    + Experience supervising or leading teams to accomplish natural resource management goals.

    + Project management, team-building, and leadership skills sufficient to prioritize and manage complex efforts and build consensus around conservation objectives.

    + Proficiency with computers and software, including GIS (ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro), word processing, spreadsheets, and relational databases.

    + Ability to use remote sensing tools (e.g., air photo interpretation), soils reports, and vegetation sampling data to plan and evaluate land management practices.

    + Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills sufficient to translate technical information for diverse audiences and stakeholder groups.

    + Ability to support employees inclusively in areas such as accommodation, scheduling, expectations, resource needs, training, and development.

    + Experience in facilitation and group processes, including conflict resolution, effective listening, negotiation, and working with diverse stakeholder groups.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Advanced degree in biology, botany, conservation biology, ecology, wildlife management, zoology, or closely related field.

    + Two or more years of supervisory experience.

    + Budgetary skills sufficient to administer budgets, prepare budget requests, and review and authorize expenditures.

    + Experience in prescribed burning or wildfire suppression.

    + Experience and certification for pesticide application.

    + Ability to operate equipment such as chain saws, ATVs, and hauling trailers.

    + Familiarity with Minnesota flora, fauna, natural history and native plant communities.

    + Experience developing and implementing operational plans and managing projects, including tracking, evaluating results, and making process improvements.

    Additional Requirements

    This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
