    About Our Program

    The purpose of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury (COT) Communications Internship is to help undergraduate and/or graduate students with a Communications emphasis further cultivate their skills through hands-on work experience. This internship provides the opportunity to support important internal and external communications initiatives for a Top Workplace to help fulfill its mission to make government work better for the State of Tennessee .

     

    The Communications Internship will provide an opportunity to work collaboratively with the Comptroller’s Communications Team at the Comptroller’s main office location in Nashville, Tennessee and regularly interface with Office leaders and staff. The intern will participate in a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, writing; researching; developing high-quality materials and messages; supporting the Office’s employee intranet site as well as social media platforms; assisting with photography and video projects; and presenting Office events.

    Location

    The Communications Internship is located in Nashville, Tennessee. The internship will require a candidate who will report in-person to the office. Candidates should be available Monday through Friday. Depending on the assignment, interns may have the opportunity for limited travel during the summer. Typical travel is in the Nashville area; however, some opportunities may allow for travel to other parts of Tennessee.

    Who We're Looking For

    The ideal candidate will be a junior, senior, or graduate student working toward a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or higher in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English or a related field. Knowledge of, and experience working in, a professional setting is a plus. It is also desirable for the candidate to have a connection to Tennessee.

    Knowledge and Abilities:

    A strong candidate for the Communications Internship will have the following skillset:

    + Knowledge of media and public relations, either through coursework or employment experience

    + Strong verbal and written communication skills using AP style

    + Project management experience

    + Self-motivated and driven to speak up and share new ideas

    + Comfortable interacting with, and interviewing, new people

    + Ability to manage time effectively

    + Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet research tools

    + Experience with photography, video, graphic design, Canva, and Adobe Creative Cloud is a plus

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    Throughout the internship, duties and responsibilities may include:

    + Researching, creating, updating and posting online content, including news and updates, feature stories, employee and leadership profiles, infographics, and social media graphics

    + Writing, proofreading, fact-checking, and editing communications materials

    + Drafting news releases, media alerts, and other external communications materials

    + Conducting research related to major projects, promotional campaigns, or events

    + Publishing content using our content management system, Adobe Experience Manager

    + Interviewing and taking photos of COT staff

    + Assisting in Office video production

    + Contributing to the presentation of Office events

    + Participating in ad hoc projects and tasks as needed

    Compensation

    Interns are paid $24 per hour via a third-party company. This position may require in-state day travel. Internship-related travel will be reimbursed.
