Reports to:Practice Manager / Clinical Development Manager
Rate of pay:$17.50/hour - $21.69/hour
Work schedule:Full-time, Monday - Friday, weekdays; the day-to-day schedule may vary slightly based on the needs of the Health Center; no evenings, weekends, or major holidays.Please note that this position will support both Primary Care and Women's Health providers, with time shared between the Ogdensburg and Canton, NY, locations.
Position Summary:The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting providers and the health center team in delivering accessible, high-quality, and patient-centered primary care. This position ensures smooth clinic operations and a positive patient experience by assisting with clinical procedures, documenting health information, preparing patients and exam rooms, and providing front-desk and care coordination support.
Primary Responsibilities:
1.Responsible for providing safe, patient-centered clinical support under the supervision of licensed providers.
a. Greets and prepares patients for visits, reviews and documents health history, and communicates changes to the provider.
b. Obtains and records vital signs, height, weight, and other clinical measurements.
c. Collects and labels laboratory specimens (e.g., phlebotomy, urine collection) following infection control and safety protocols.
d. Performs point-of-care testing and documents results accurately.
e. Assists providers during examinations and procedures within the MA scope of practice.
f. Maintains exam rooms and equipment, ensuring cleanliness, proper stocking, and compliance with infection control standards.
2.Responsible for supporting care coordination and patient education to promote equitable access and positive health outcomes.
a. Assists patients in accessing resources and referrals to support whole-person care.
3.Responsible for administrative and front-desk support to ensure smooth clinic operations.
a. Assists with scheduling, check-in, and completion of required forms and consents.
b. Answers and directs phone calls, messages, and patient inquiries in a courteous and timely manner.
c. Verifies and updates demographic, insurance, and health record information.
d. Conducts all required chart preparation activities for the patient visit per policy and procedure.
4.Responsible for maintaining accurate documentation and compliance with regulatory requirements.
a. Documents all patient care activities in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance with policy and standards.
b. Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA regulations.
c. Adheres to all agency, federal, and state guidelines regarding infection control, safety, and quality assurance.
5.Responsible for contributing to a collaborative, mission-driven team environment.
a. Participates actively in team huddles, staff meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
b. Demonstrates cultural humility and respect for diversity in all interactions with patients and team members.
c. Engages in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and support innovative care practices.
6.Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or Health Center management.
Requirements
+ High School Diploma, GED, or Medical Assistant Certification required.
+ One year of patient care experience preferred
+ Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and medical terminology.
+ Strong organizational and computer skills.
+ Ability to maintain good working relationships with others.
+ Exhibits a high level of professionalism and confidentiality in dealing with issues.
+ Medium work; Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs., lift and support patients with and without help.
+ Ability to walk and stand for extended periods.
+ Regular exposure to infectious diseases, blood and airborne pathogens, needle sticks, hygiene issues, and other odors.
+ Able to tolerate clinical smells.
+ Ability to read digital readouts, recognize colors, and operate necessary medical equipment.
+ Ability to operate mechanical devices used by patients.
+ Ability to wear necessary hospital masks, gowns, gloves, and close-toed shoes.
