    Description

    Do you have an interest in stormwater and related environmental tasks in a professional environment? Do you want to learn more about the City's responsibilities in these areas? If so, consider applying for the Stormwater/Environmental Division Intern (Seasonal) position with the Public Works Department!

     

    The Stormwater/Environmental Division Intern (Seasonal) position is a temporary/seasonal role (no benefits) with a preferred starting rate of $14.93 per hour. The ideal candidate will be available during regular business hours to work 40 hours or less per week on an as-needed basis or for the completion of a specific assignment.

    In the Stormwater/Environmental Division Intern (Seasonal) position, you'll:

    + Perform a variety of work to assemble and enter data related to the City’s Stormwater Utility Fee Program and MS4/TMDL programs;

    + Provide support in the following areas:

    + Water quality sampling;

    + Facilitating stream clean-ups;

    + Compiling data for quarterly reports;

    + Educational and public participation events;

    + Tree Inventory;

    + MS4 inspections, including illicit discharge, SWPPP, and high-priority facility sites;

    + Vegetation species management, including riparian buffers;

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

     

    Physical Requirements: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. The worker is exposed to hazards including but not limited to vehicular traffic and wildlife. The worker will be required to follow all safety procedures and wear all specialized personal protective equipment in accordance with the City of Harrisonburg Department of Public Works Safety & Health Manual & Employee Safety Handbook.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Current enrollment in or recent graduate of a biology, geology, environmental studies, science, forestry, or related Bachelor's degree level program.

    + Valid driver's license.

    The id eal candidate will have:

    + Knowledge of horticulture and landscaping principles and practices, including the hazards of stream/landscape and plant maintenance and the appropriate safety precautions;

    + Knowledge of stream ecology; water quality/chemistry; water-borne pollutants;

    + Proficiency with computers and office software.

    Successful applicants for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:

    + DMV Driving Record Review;

    + Criminal Background Check.
