About the team
Tapestry is an energy intelligence company incubated at X, the Moonshot Factory, the innovation lab within Alphabet. We are building the intelligence layer for the future electric grid. Our mission is to make the grid visible, predictable, and optimized through advanced AI systems so clean and reliable energy is available for everyone.
The grid is one of the most important and complex systems in the world. It is under increasing pressure from electrification, renewable adoption, and climate-driven volatility. Tapestry creates the software and models that help utilities and grid operators understand what is happening, anticipate what is coming, and respond with confidence.
Our team brings together experts in AI, energy systems, software engineering, and product design. We operate with the agility of a young company supported by the technical rigor and resources in Alphabet’s ecosystem.
If you want to work on problems that matter and build tools with real impact, we would love to meet you.
About the role
We are seeking an exceptionally qualified professional to assume the role of Lead, Public Policy. This pivotal position is responsible for the comprehensive development, strategic counsel, and direct execution of Tapestry’s public policy agenda, with a focus on the intersection between the U.S. energy and AI sectors.
The individual selected will function as the organization's senior policy representative, operating as a highly autonomous individual contributor responsible for all policy output. Success in this role demands deep, current subject matter expertise in energy policy, coupled with an essential and proven track record of advocacy derived from substantial experience within the private sector. The lead must effectively translate complex technical and business imperatives into compelling policy positions, ensuring Tapestry is strategically positioned to navigate and influence critical legislative and regulatory environments.
A fundamental requirement for this role is establishing and maintaining an active presence in Washington D.C. to ensure continuous, high-impact engagement with the policy ecosystem.
This position reports to the company’s Head of Communications and Public Affairs.
How you’ll make 10x impact:
+ Strategic Advocacy and Influence: Develop and execute advanced public policy strategies designed to shape legislative and regulatory outcomes across Federal and state levels. Proactively engage with policymakers, key Congressional and administrative offices, and relevant industry bodies to advance Tapestry’s interests.
+ Policy Analysis and Counsel: Systematically monitor, analyze, and prioritize policy, legislative, and regulatory developments impacting the company, specifically within the evolving energy and artificial intelligence landscapes. Provide executive-level counsel on policy implications associated with new products, services, and corporate strategy.
+ External Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate and steward high-level relationships with a diverse network of external stakeholders, including government officials, trade associations, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions.
+ Content Development and Communications: Author high-quality, persuasive policy briefs, white papers, legislative language, and testimony. Ensure clear, concise, and accessible communication of Tapestry's policy positions to varied, highly sophisticated audiences.
+ Operational Execution: Function as the principal operator for the policy portfolio, personally managing all aspects of policy work from strategy formulation and drafting to direct engagement and representation.
+ Corporate Alignment: Serve as the critical interface with Google's Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) team to ensure strategic alignment of Tapestry's efforts with the broader corporate policy framework.
What you should have:
+ At least 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in public policy, government relations, or a closely related field.
+ A minimum of 3 years of this experience must be direct private sector experience in public policy or government relations advocacy. Candidates whose background is exclusively policy formulation within governmental or academic entities will not meet the requirements for this role.
+ Demonstrated and current subject matter expertise in US energy and utilities public policy. The candidate must possess the intellectual depth and industry fluency to command =immediate credibility among policymakers and industry professionals.
+ Required to be resident and maintain an active professional presence in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. This commitment is essential for continuous, high-impact engagement with the policy ecosystem.
+ Proven track record of high-impact performance operating in a Senior Individual Contributor capacity. Must demonstrate the capability and willingness to independently own and execute all tactical and strategic elements of the policy portfolio without dedicated staff management.
+ Possess the professional gravitas and acumen necessary to represent the organization effectively before high-level government officials and members of Congress. Demonstrated history of navigating complex political environments, ideally exhibiting a capacity for bipartisan or cross-spectrum engagement.
+ Superior written and verbal communication skills. Acute political and strategic judgment is required to assess risk and opportunity in a dynamic, high-stakes environment.
It would be great if you had these:
+ Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s in Public Policy, Juris Doctor, or a relevant discipline).
+ Prior experience managing external counsel, lobbyists, and policy advisors.
+ Familiarity with the structural and operational characteristics of US Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs/ISOs) or state Public Utility Commissions.
+ Experience in high-growth, technically driven organizations, such as the technology or software sector.
