    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    The Connectors and LACs department is searching for a responsible, enthusiastic, and conscientious student intern researcher, with the ability and aptitude to learn and work safely in a team-oriented experimental materials research laboratory.

    On any given day, one may be called upon to:

    + Learn and assist with 3D printing processes.

    + Learn and assist with model design using CAD software.

    + Learn and assist with data collection and data analysis.

    + Work effectively and responsibly in a research team and contribute towards a safe and secure laboratory working environment.

     

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

    Salary Range:

    At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package.     Qualifications We Require:

    You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

    + Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited undergraduate program

    + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

    + Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

    + Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

     

    Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

    Qualifications We Desire:

    + Mechanical, Electrical, or Materials Engineer or relevant degree

    + Experience using computer aided design (CAD) software.

    + Experience working in a laboratory.

    + Experience or knowledge of additive manufacturing techniques.

    + Mature oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by coursework or project assignments.

    About Our Team:

    The Connectors & Lightning Arrestor Connector (LAC) Department designs, develops, tests, and qualifies hermetic, non-hermetic, specialty, and lightning arrestor connectors, and conducts Component and Material Evaluation (CME) of Stockpile Lightning Arrestor Connectors (LACs), delivering comprehensive, accurate, and timely assessments of stockpile Lightning Arrestor Connectors. We use the Realize Product Subsystem (RPSS) to realize Mark Quality product that covers the complete product realization cycle of requirements, design, development, specification, qualification, procurement, delivery and stockpile support through our partners at the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC). We employ defect-prevention strategies to gain an understanding of design margin during the development cycle. The department's capabilities include the ability to address multiple challenging requirements related to meeting high reliability numbers over extremely long life, radiation tolerance, nuclear safety requirements, and size & weight restrictions.

    Security Clearance:

    Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.     If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

     

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
