    The School of Music in the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music Composition to begin September 1, 2026.

    Major/Essential Functions:

    In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

     

    1. As a faculty member in the School of Music, you will be expected to:

    2. Teach composition classes and lessons to undergraduate and graduate composition majors. Teach courses in instrumentation, orchestration, and/or counterpoint as needed.

    3. Provide leadership and curricular oversight as coordinator of the composition area.

    4. Recruit and retain a talented cohort of graduate and undergraduate students within the composition area, School of Music and College of Visual and Performing Arts.

    5. Collaborate with faculty from the school, college, and university to provide performance and collaboration opportunities for student composers.

    6. Direct graduate and undergraduate student research and coordinate teaching assistants

    7. Continue to build and sustain a significant composition and research profile.

    8. Provide service to the community, school, college, and university via service on committees, outreach, and engagement.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

    1. Established national or international profile as a composer, evidenced by awards, major premieres, and commissions, and performance history.

    2. Experience teaching a broad range of compositional styles, including composing for wind ensemble, orchestra, and choral ensembles.

    3. Experience mentoring students in utilizing notation software and digital audio workstations.

    4. Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate composition majors.

    5. Experience teaching instrumentation, orchestration, and/or counterpoint courses.

    6. Evidence of successful experience coordinating an area or similar unit within a School of Music

    7. Evidence of successful collaboration regionally, nationally, and internationally.

    8. Active engagement in professional organizations with demonstrated potential for future leadership.

    The School of Music is NASM accredited and offers the B.A. in Music, the B.M. in Music with concentrations in Music Education, Composition, Performance, and Theory, the M.M. in Music Education, the M.M. in Music with concentrations in Composition, Conducting, Music Theory, Musicology, Piano Pedagogy, and Performance, the D.M.A. with tracks in Composition, Conducting, Performance, and Piano Pedagogy, the Ph.D. in Music Education, the Ph.D. in Fine Arts with concentrations in Arts Administration, Music Education, Musicology, and Music Theory, the Undergraduate Minor in Music, Undergraduate Certificates in Community Arts Entrepreneurship, Jazz Studies, and World Music, and Graduate Certificates in Early Music Performance Practice, Woodwind Specialty and Piano Pedagogy.
