BACKGROUND:
The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (the “Port Authority”) Law Department seeks an experienced senior attorney to join its Manhattan-based 100-person team as an Assistant General Counsel of the Office of Legal Counsel. The work will consist of conducting research on novel legal issues and advising the General Counsel and First Deputy General Counsel in responding to agency issues, preparing legal opinions for delivery to the Board of Commissioners, handling governance matters for the agency in its regulatory role and assisting the Office of the Secretary on governance issues (including review of Board resolutions and minutes), providing advice and counsel to agency personnel on corporate governance and regulatory matters, and ensuring agency compliance with freedom of information laws and policies.
The ideal candidate will bring exceptional leadership skills, extensive legal expertise, and the ability to guide and manage a dynamic team of attorneys and manage outside counsel. This position reports to a First Deputy General Counsel and will encompass a broad range of sophisticated matters arising in the course of the Port Authority’s daily operations, or as required to provide advice to internal staff and the Port Authority’s Board of Commissioners.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:
+ Member of the Bar in good standing in relevant jurisdictions, including New York or New Jersey.
+ 15+ years of relevant legal experience with emphasis on one or more of the following areas: municipal litigation, general commercial transactions, real estate transactions, construction or procurement; familiarity and experience with the type of legal issues likely to arise in the practice.
Ideal candidates will present the following profile:
+ Proven ability to provide direction and supervision to a team of attorneys, including case management and review/approval of complex legal documents while ensuring consistent high quality legal work.
+ Detail-oriented with strong analytical, and drafting skills, accompanied by outstanding communication skills.
+ Ability to consider and implement process-based changes to agency procedures to proactively mitigate risk.
+ Proven track record to perform effectively under pressure and to reconcile conflicting priorities toward resolution.
+ Exercise sound judgment, with savvy approach to recognition of intersection of public, business, and political components of work.
+ Ability to think strategically and to act decisively while thoughtfully balancing and/or managing risk.
+ Ability to take ownership of, and responsibility for, managing legal work on large, complex matters with aggressive completion deadlines.
+ Ability to operate in a constantly evolving complex legal environment, while maintaining the highest ethical standards and integrity.
+ Willingness and aptitude to use new technology tools to perform work efficiently and accurately.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey anticipates that the actual salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on aspects such as experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal factors. The expected compensation range for this role is:
Minimum: $175,000 Midpoint: $225,000 Maximum: $265,000
In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits employees to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business, and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required on business needs.
