    Summary The position is located at VA New York Harbor Healthcare System in Manhattan and/or Brooklyn for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The purpose of the position is to perform all processing of specimens collected throughout the facility for the purpose of providing acceptable samples for clinical laboratory analysis. Responsibilities ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** MAJOR DUTIES Receives all specimens delivered to the laboratory for processing Accessions all specimens into the computer system, using both automated and manual methods/downtime Transports specimens from the collection site to the respective department for testing Packages specimens and creates a manifest for all specimens being sent between Manhattan and New York campuses for testing Answers questions relative to patient specimens and tests requested Instructs and assists patients, physicians, and providers on specimen requirements Ensures adequate usage of equipment and maintenance of all required records The incumbent will also trouble shoot all specimen type discrepancies according to specimen requirements Accession and properly handle specimens in preparation for packaging and shipping to reference laboratories Provide coverage for reference testing personnel, to include packaging and shipping Aliquot and store sample according to specimen integrity Load sample onto instrument Multitask/prioritize and work independently Scan and file documents Additional duties as assigned Work Schedule: Full time; Monday - Friday; 8:30am - 5:00pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job To be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. Qualifications ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Health Technician position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS 5) of Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Have you successfully completed one-half year of graduate education or internship that is directly related to the work of this position as a Health Technician? NOTE TO APPLICANTS: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 9 semester hours will be considered as one-half year of graduate study.
