    Description

    Interns with the City of College Station will be exposed to a variety of functions, operations and processes related to providing essential municipal services to citizens and visitors to the city. Interns will have the opportunity to shadow and assist city staff with a variety of projects and processes as they function in their individual departments. The Intern will have firsthand experience observing with city staff in day-to-day duties as they manage multiple demands, respond to a variety of questions and concerns, as well as serve the community in different formats (e.g., field, electronic and public form).

     

    The following duties 1-12 are a representation of primary Intern duties; projects may vary depending on department. Each department will determine the specific projects on which the Intern will be able to assist or contribute.

    Principal Duties

    Principal Intern Duties (all interns):

    + Learn the overall concept of public service as a municipality, including the priorities, limitations, expectations, and other aspects of public service.

    + Rotate assignments within a department to develop an understanding of the operational components necessary, possibly including customer service, scope of services, data capture and reporting, process review and other related activities.

    + Gain an understanding of the City’s current business tools/internal software (ie. Munis, City Works, etc.) to complete various tasks, assignments, or other project related steps.

    + Appropriately engage with city staff and customers, maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professional behavior while representing/participating with the city in meetings, presentations or events.

    + Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Department Specific Project Duties (based on assignment):

    + Gain an understanding managing a wild scape native garden to support our native wildlife, which include, weeding out invasive non-native plants, managing spreading native plants, removing trash, pruning, cleaning trails, watering, repairing irrigation, mulching, and moving soil.

    + Learn to identify native plants in all stages of life and how to care for each.

    + Learn how to relocate beneficial native plants.

    + Assist with garden maintenance, repair, and creation.

    + Assist with seed collection and plant propagation as needed for habitat restoration.

    + Assist with education and direction of park guests and program participants as needed.

    + Assist with Monarch March, BioBlitz, Park in the Dark and other city events as they relate to native plants.

    Qualifications

    Minimum:

    Currently enrolled in an accredited college degree/program relevant to the intern opportunity. Experience and/or advanced studies related to field of study, with understanding of municipal functions/services, such as the H.O.P.S. with Texas AgriLife. Verbal & written communication abilities. Be able to lift and move 30lbs and work in Texas weather conditions. Have a basic understanding of garden tools and safety.

     

    Supplemental Information

     

    Hours: 20-30 hours/week; depending on availability and internship requirements
