Overview
The Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance and Engineering ( **TFOME** ) team at the NASA Glenn Research Center is searching for a Research Mechanic.
TFOME is dedicated to excellence in service and to providing outstanding technical opportunities for our employees. We specialize in providing engineering and technical services in the areas of aero/space propulsion and power test facilities to NASA Glenn.
Compensation
The hourly rate for this position is $45.86 hourly. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

Function of Position
Perform highly skilled, specialized technical assignments in either mechanical, electrical, or electronic related fields within a NASA Research Test Facility environment. Functions as a Master Level Operator Technician as a result of achieving critical experience after serving previously for considerable years at the Journeyman level. (i.e. RLM 2, Electrical Operations Technician, Engineering Tech V). Performs non-routine and complex assignments involving responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project of relatively limited scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse project, selects and adapts plans, techniques, designs, or layouts, contacts personnel in related activities to resolve problems and coordinate the work, reviews, analyzes, and integrates the technical work of others. Supervisor or professional engineer outlines objectives, requirements, and design approaches. Completed work is reviewed for technical adequacy and satisfaction of requirements. This incumbent may train and be assisted by lower level technicians.
Duties and Responsibilities
Considered a subject matter expert in test operations and maintenance relative to trade discipline and assigned NASA test facility.
Capable of performing advanced assignments that include design / re-design, fabrication, operations, testing, and maintenance of specialized research and facility equipment or hardware that require critical performance standards.
Capable of analyzing test data and operational results to determine if research milestones or test objectives have been achieved.
Capable of providing test results through expert level written, and or oral reports, spreadsheets, to engineering staff for process improvements.
May plan or assist in arranging test set ups to evaluate / improve operational equipment or research hardware performance (i.e. flight hardware, data systems, or customer manufactured hardware).
May determine and conduct destructive and non-destructive testing, equipment modification, and test procedures for prototype development; (I.e. materials and structures sample testing, mechanical / electrical cycle testing) able to conduct critical tests using all types of instruments, tools, and or measuring / inspection devices. Prepare reports on findings and make recommendations as required.
May prepare and plan a worksite by designing, evaluating and reviewing blueprints, performing safety inspections, identify problems and implement solutions or corrective actions by means of reports and documentation.
Train and evaluate team members within assigned test facilities in order to achieve level of qualified operator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
A. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Works from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, man-lifts, cab cranes, suspended platforms or cages, etc.
2. Works while bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, or in a prone position for extended time periods.
3. Works in closely confined spaces.
4. Lifts and carries items up to 50 pounds, sometimes up and down stairways, where lifting devices and hoists are not available.
5. Pushes and pulls heavy objects.
6. Ability to use hearing and vision protection and respiratory equipment.
7. One eye (minimum) correctable to 20/20.
8. Ability to distinguish eight color panel display.
B. WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. Work indoors and out in high and low temperatures and in all types of weather conditions.
2. Work in dusty, noisy, hot, high humidity, dirty, and greasy environment.
3. Work in areas where there may be materials that are irritating to eyes, nose, throat, and skin while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
4. Work with other personnel in a group that is Team Oriented.
5. Accept and work within established policies and procedures pertaining to company rules and regulations.
C. MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT INVOLVED IN WORK TASKS
1. Up to 1½ ton trucks and vehicles
2. Fork lifts
3. Manlifts such as JLG, scissor lifts, and Bucket truck, etc.
4. Cranes
5. Mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic hand tools
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Journeyman level certificate in Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics trade, with extensive master level skills and experience. Completion of a 4-year State approved apprenticeship program with a Journeyman’s certificate highly desired or have equivalent vocational school training with sufficient combined work experience and skills.
Must have a minimum of 8 years working experience within a NASA Research Test Facility and have achieved master level experience as a qualified operator (fully qualified on all operational systems within a large test facility, or be qualified on a minimum of 4 separate test facilities within a smaller test facility; considered a subject matter expert in all phases of test operations
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or supervision.
Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of workflow.
Must be self-motivated and a "Team Player" with good interpersonal and communication skills.
Must be able to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.
