    UPMC Hamot is looking to add a full-time Patient Care Technician to the TNICU!

     

    This position is rotating days/nights and every other holiday.

     

    _Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience._

    Patient Care & Clinical Support

    + Provides direct patient care, including assisting with procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and transporting patients.

    + Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies as directed.

    + Obtains and records vital signs, blood glucose testing, weights, intake and output, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, and hospital-acquired condition and patient safety indicators.

    + Collects and processes specimens according to policy.

    + Reports changes in patient condition and provides timely feedback to the Registered Nurse (RN).

    Technical Skills & Equipment

    + Performs UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities and unit-specific skills, including but not limited to simple dressings, Foley care and removal, bladder scanning, straight catheterization, IV catheter removal, point-of-care testing, and 12-lead EKGs.

    + Ensures equipment is functioning properly and promptly reports malfunctions to the appropriate department.

    + Completes 'ticket to ride' responsibilities for intra-hospital patient transport.

    Unit Support & Teamwork

    + Contributes to overall unit operations by responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and assisting with patient transport.

    + Establishes professional, respectful, and collaborative relationships with all members of the healthcare team and other departments.

    + Demonstrates accountability, flexibility, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

    Documentation & Compliance

    + Documents patient care accurately and timely in the medical record according to established policies and procedures.

    + Strictly adheres to hospital policies related to patient care, confidentiality, and safety, including standard precautions.

    + Access to medications is limited to delivering medications to the nurse.

    Professional Development & Performance

    + Constructively receives feedback and identifies learning needs with the unit director or direct leader.

    + Takes initiative to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.

    + Requests assistance with planning and prioritization as needed.

    + Participates in self-review and supports department-based projects and quality initiatives.

    + Views challenges as opportunities and understands how individual behavior impacts unit efficiency.

    Patient & Family Education

    + Provides basic education to patients and families under the direction of the RN.

    + May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints in accordance with physician orders and hospital policy.

    Safety, Culture & Professional Conduct

    + Demonstrates awareness of cultural diversity, workplace safety, impairment in the health professions, and horizontal violence.

    + Promotes a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

     

    Advanced Skills (Based on Department Need)

    In addition to required standard competencies, the Patient Care Technician will achieve and maintain competency in one or more advanced skills as operationally required, including:

    + Phlebotomy/venipuncture

    + Peripheral IV removal

    + Indwelling Foley catheter removal

    + Basic arrhythmia recognition

    + 12-lead EKG

    + Nasogastric (NG) tube clamping and removal

    + High school diploma or GED required.

    + Must meet one of the following experience or education requirements:

    + One (1) year of general healthcare experience; or

    + Six (6) months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA, with Patient Care Technician (PCT) competency achieved within 120 days of hire, transfer, or promotion for candidates with less than one year of experience; or

    + Current enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Physician Assistant (PA), or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation; or

    + Completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.

    + Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician class required.

    + Successful completion of eRecord training required.

    + Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

    + Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration, within 30 days of hire.

    + Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.

    + Act 34 clearance required.
