CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Scientist carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University’s research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
+ Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
+ Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
+ Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results. Works with other researchers to use and develop end products. Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
+ Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.
+ Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
+ Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
+ Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
+ Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education: Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree relevant field.
Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions
The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is currently seeking an Assistant Scientist who will join the Cancer Modeling Shared Resource. This translational Facility provides qualified, cost effective and state-of-the art services to foster cancer research advancements and accelerate the discovery of tailored antitumor therapies. We are seeking a dynamic individual who would like to participate in the creation and development of new service lines in a busy and fast-paced environment, mainly focused on the generation, histopathological characterization, and analysis of mouse models of disease, including both genetically engineered mice and transplantation-based models. This person will directly assist the Director in running and implementing new services, as well as developing and adapting state-of-the-art technologies to support researchers in the field of veterinary pathology. He or she will also support the day-to-day scientific activities of the facility related with these activities. The successful candidate will also support the development and implementation of the procedures required to accomplish research goals related to preclinical mouse model-related service provision under the direction of Dr. Bilbao.
Specific responsibilities of the position include and are not limited to:
Provide scientific support to projects involving animal modeling and histopathology as the he/she collaborates with other team members and relevant parties to define project aims and scope, identify deliverables, potential bottlenecks, obstacles, and timelines, ensuring that tasks, priorities, and goals are completed and coordinated with management. This includes designing and performing complex laboratory assignments, as well as planning and conducting experiments related with mouse model generation and characterization, and the generation of novel mouse models of disease. Provide scientific support in the preparation and maintenance of records and reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation, quality control and compliance. This includes keeping accurate computer records, maintain/update data in computer-based applications/databases (including specialized animal management database), record experimental data, prepare data for analysis, perform the analysis, and publication. Monitor timelines and track study/project performance metrics, including quality of the work and output, and analyze the successful completion of short- and long-term goals of the scientific projects. Prepare materials for scientific reports, as required by the study/project. Review documents and scientific literature to generate scientific reports and publications. Reviews data collected, inserts them into the study/project database, prepares data for analysis, performs the analysis and publishes findings. Maintain cutting-edge knowledge of the animal modeling and histopathology fields including major advances and emerging trends to support the director and team in the development and implementation of new services and state-of-the-art technologies to address scientific problems. Manage email communications and maintain internal documentation. Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures; safeguard University assets; participate in University/outside educational training as required. Perform other duties as requested. Department Specific Qualifications
Education: Qualified candidates must possess a PhD degree in Animal science, Biology, Biological Sciences, Life Science and/or other related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience: The successful candidate must have a minimum of three years of animal research experience performing the routine as well as the specialized technical procedures mentioned above, preferably supervising people and assisting in the day-to-day management of a research laboratory. Extensive knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures for animal facilities, understanding the requirements for maintaining (immunocompromised) laboratory animals, together with excellent computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office and animal/record management databases is required. Experience with analytical techniques (PCR, hematology and clinical chemistry analyzer, histology, flow cytometry, noninvasive imaging) is preferred.

+ Knowledge of animal husbandry requirements, methods, and techniques, including the ability to establish dosages and administer drugs to animals, and to maintain laboratory/veterinary/animal husbandry records.
+ Extensive knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures for animal facilities, understanding the requirements for maintaining (immunocompromised) laboratory animals, including knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to animal husbandry.
+ Knowledge of sterile procedures, general laboratory operations and/or procedures, as well as knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
+ Self-motivated individual with a strong desire to learn.
+ Exceptional critical thinking and strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills.
+ Excellent organizational skills.
+ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. He or she is expected to interact with a variety of staff (facility team, users, and other related facilities) in a professional, polite, and positive attitude.
+ Excellent English (both verbal and written) required.
+ Ability to shift focus between multiple projects, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
