Job Summary
The Gifts of Art program at Michigan Medicine invites applications for the position of Musician for the Hospital Music Program. This is a 24 hour a week position. Basic duties include playing appropriate music in public spaces within the hospital facilities. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of appropriate repertoire styles for healthcare environments, and be familiar with issues of general hospital operations, as well as medical, emotional and ethical issues related to patients, staff and visitors in hospitals.
This position is for a talented, trained musician with an expansive and varied repertoire of appropriate music and knowledge of hospital environments and competencies to provide comforting ambient live music to help calm the environment of care for patients, visitors and staff.
**Key Responsibilities** :
+ Provide appropriate comforting music in public spaces within UM Hospitals
+ Audition, schedule and monitor volunteer musicians in public areas/waiting areas
+ Provide experiential opportunities for university music students in healthcare environments
+ Host Gifts of Art hospital public music performances as needed
+ Provide background music for special programs
+ Other duties as assigned
Supervision Received
General supervision from Gifts of Art Director and scheduling and support from Music Program coordinator. Must also respond to clinical staff in event of a medical emergency.

Required Qualifications*
+ Demonstrate proficiency on primary instrument
+ Master's degree in music on primary instrument or equivalent training and expertise
+ Proficient in a wide range of musical styles and genres; ability to improvise
+ Knowledge of (or experience with) how music impacts a dynamic hospital environment, and understanding of appropriate repertoire; ability to quickly adapt
+ Provide own instrument and transportation
+ Be able to transport, carry, move and set up own instrument and accessory equipment without assistance
+ Ability to communicate appropriately with patients, families and staff
+ Understand their music is of service rather than a performance
+ Knowledge of music technology & equipment to host live performances
+ Minimum 2 years' experience as hospital musician
+ Candidates must provide audio or video files that demonstrate range of repertoire.
+ Must possess excellent communication skills and a desire to use their talent in service to others.
+ Solid computers skills
Desired Qualifications*
+ Postgraduate or specialist degree on primary instrument
+ Minimum 3 years' experience as a performer on primary instrument
+ Training and/or minimum 3 years' experience in music as service
+ Experience/Knowledge of academic/university music schools including wellness curriculum
+ Experience teaching or mentoring university students in music as service
Work Schedule
Four weekdays, 6 hours per day. TBD

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
