    Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

     

    This is a temporary or on-call position. Performs a variety of duties in support of summer camps and conferences, such as responding to participant concerns, questions and emergencies; maintaining/monitoring camp rules, checking in/out of participants, attending meetings. May involve overnight supervision of participants. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

    Unit Position Summary

    Program Counselors play a key role in creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for academically talented youth participating in GATE’s pre-college summer experiences. PCs may choose to stay on campus or commute daily.

     

    Program Counselors are responsible for escorting and supervising students on campus and in nearby locations, managing daily logistics, and fostering a positive community among participants. PCs work collaboratively as part of a team under the direction of Lead Program Counselors, each overseeing a small group of students.

     

    Typical hours are approximately 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily. During the week of June 22–26, 2026, PCs may be required to stay on campus in the dorms with students.

     

    Summer Program Dates

     

    June 15 – July 17, 2026

     

    (Program will be off the week of July 4th: June 28 – July 5)

     

    Programs Offered

    Program Counselors will support one or more of the following GATE pre-college programs:

    + Gifted University for Precocious and Passionate Youth (GUPPY): Half-day or full-day week-long program for academically talented students in grades 4–6.

    + Intensive Studies for Gifted and Talented (IS4GT): Week-long program for academically talented students in grades 6–11.

    + Math, Science, and Technology at MSU (MST@MSU): One-week program for academically talented students in grades 7–8.

    + Math, Science, Technology, and Leadership (MSTL): One-week program for academically talented students in grades 9–10.

    Desired Qualifications

    + Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license and be comfortable driving minors in university vehicles.

    + Must attend mandatory trainings:

    + May 16, 2026 (10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.)

    + June 7, 2026 (11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)

    + Must be available June 15 – July 17, 2026 (excluding June 28 – July 5).

    + Experience working with youth.

    + Effective communication skills.

    + Responsible, respectful, and professional demeanor.
