The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia, located in beautiful Charlottesville, VA, seeks a Certified Nurse Midwife for a full-time appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We are looking for a flexible, energetic, highly motivated professional to help us grow our established midwifery service. This is a 40 hour a week position with a mix of clinic and call responsibilities.
Principal responsibilities include full-scope obstetrical and well-women gynecological healthcare in a midwifery clinical practice that provides outpatient ambulatory visits, 24/7 call coverage and in-hospital deliveries. Additional responsibilities will include performing labor and delivery triage; educating residents and medical, nurse practitioner, and midwifery students; developing women's ambulatory service programs; community outreach; and participating in departmental activities, including research.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work comfortably and confidently in a fast-paced academic environment; will support the growth of midwifery practice within the UVA Health System through excellent communication, teamwork, teaching, and patient care skills; and will support patients and their families, facility personnel and the broader mission of the UVA Health System in providing coordinated, efficient, and patient-centered, quality care.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience: 2+ years of prior experience, background in an academic medical center or working with learners preferred
• Licensure/Certifications: Group Prenatal care, IBCLC
Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.
Administration:
+ • Prepares and attends to all reports, claims, and correspondence necessary or appropriate to the performance of professional services.
+ • Maintains compliance and regulatory documentation for the purposes of administration and reimbursement.
+ Participates and contributes to departmental/divisional/institutional initiatives.
+ Provides input in the annual review of other staff members.
+ Assists in the development of clinical pathways and protocols.
+ Coordinates meeting applicable leadership standards for all disciplines in collaboration with physician(s) and team members.
+ Participates in accreditation preparedness.
+ Coordinates meeting applicable performance improvement standards for all disciplines in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members.
+ Maintains professional licensure, DEA registration (as applicable), certification and practice agreements as required by the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, national certification organizations, and the institution.
+ Maintains and demonstrates competencies for designated privileges requested as required for ongoing professional practice evaluation and outcomes.
+ Serves on appropriate committees in department/division/institution and community
+ Participates in/presents at Departmental meetings including M&M, Grand Rounds, Faculty meetings, etc.
Professional:
• Demonstrates respect to all within the institution and community.
• Performs procedures within scope of practice and UVA Health System credentialing and privileges.
• Requests consultation and initiates referrals to other health care providers, including specialists when and if needed.
• Meets quality standards as determined by the Medical Director and/or UVA Health System.
• Reports births, deaths, outbreaks of communicable diseases and other information critical to the patient’s and/or the public’s health as required by legal or governmental authorities, in a timely manner.
• Follows policies and procedures, including those of UPG, UVA Medical Center, CMS and other contracted payers with which the entity may contract.
• Accurately assigns Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), codes.
• Updates practice through continuing education by attending conferences, rounds, reports, lectures, journal clubs and regional/national professional conferences.
• Performs other duties as assigned that are commensurate with professional service normally and customarily provided by a licensed independent provider.
Clinical:
• Exercises independent judgment in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of medical processes and procedures commensurate with training and experience, as credentialed by UVA Health System.
• Performs and documents comprehensive health histories and physical assessments, to include initiation of CPR or other appropriate emergency therapy as needed.
• Formulates diagnoses, identifies problems and health risk profiles, documents and clearly communicates with other members of the health care team.
• Performs, orders, and interprets diagnostic studies, such as x-rays and laboratory tests, in consultation with peers and colleagues.
• Orders medications, treatments and therapies in accordance with Virginia Prescriptive regulations.
• Participates in on-call responsibilities as appropriate and as determined by department or unit.
• Manages patients in accordance with established UVA Medical Center and UVA UPG policies and procedures.
• Evaluates and analyzes patient responses to the disease process and/or therapeutic, diagnostic interventions.
Leadership:
• Provides information, education and support to patients/families regarding disease processes and treatment plans (diagnostic procedures, medications and treatments), thus facilitating communication between patients/families and the health care team.
• Works in conjunction with the medical director, administrative management, nursing and other interprofessional team members to facilitate patient care and management throughout the health care system.
• May serve on select committees as needed.
• May participate in the clinical experience of students (graduate/post graduate advanced practice, nursing, and medical students), interns, and residents, as appropriate.
• Participates in group, peer and other review activities as requested.
• Promotes the professional practice of the advanced practice group by serving as a clinical resource to nursing, medical and allied health care practitioners.
• Seeks professional development and growth opportunities that enhance professional practice through formal and informal activities including developing and presenting educational programs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.
Experience: Department and unit specific.
Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
The starting base rate for this role is $122,783.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
