    Duties Description This posting if for a summer internship program will run 6/1/2026-8/7/2026The NYSDHR is the state agency tasked with enforcing New York's Human Rights Law, which prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, credit, and other areas. The division investigates, prosecutes, and adjudicates complaints of discrimination and works to eliminate barriers to equal treatment and opportunity for all New Yorkers.The Summer Legal Intern will work closely with attorneys and investigators at the NYSDHR to assist with legal and investigatory tasks related to discrimination complaints. Interns will gain hands-on experience in civil rights law and the workings of a state agency dedicated to upholding human rights.Key Responsibilities:• Assist with legal research and analysis related to civil rights, discrimination law, and ongoing investigations and/or policy and legislation.• Draft memoranda, reports, and summaries related to discrimination complaints and investigations.• Support attorneys with case preparation, including reviewing and analyzing evidence, witness statements, and legal precedents.• Observe and participate in meetings and hearings, including those related to the investigation and resolution of discrimination complaints.• Prepare written recommendations and assist in preparing case files for litigation or settlement.• Engage in public outreach and educational efforts, including developing informational materials or presentations.• Attend training sessions and seminars to enhance understanding of New York State Human Rights Law and civil rights protections.Internship Opportunities available in the following programs:Hearings Unit: The Hearings Unit welcomes an intern with an interest in the Human Rights Law who seeks exposure to how the law is applied, settlements achieved and hearings conducted. The intern would view hearings, conduct research and shadow/assist the ALJs. Prosecutions Unit: Attorneys in the Division’s Prosecutions Unit prosecute complaints of discrimination in housing, employment, education, and public accommodations before Administrative Law Judges. These attorneys engage in extensive settlement negotiations and monitor compliance with settlement terms. They prepare for litigation by interviewing witnesses, examining relevant documents, and drafting necessary statements. Prosecutions Unit attorneys present evidence and argue cases at administrative hearings, and draft post-hearing briefs and objections to recommended orders.Housing Investigations Unit: The Housing Investigations Unit (HIU) is a centralized unit located at the agency’s headquarters, in The Bronx, NY. HIU investigates reported claims of discrimination for the entire State of New York in housing, commercial spaces, and land. HIU collaborates with the agency’s Section 8 Early Intervention Unit and engages in joint investigations with the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. HIU seeks legal interns to assist with investigations of alleged discrimination and to conduct legal research on caselaw and settlements involving allegations of housing discrimination. Division Initiated Action Unit: The Division Initiated Action Unit (DIAU) caseload focuses on investigating alleged systemic patterns of discrimination involving discriminatory treatment and/or impact of a protected class in employment, housing, public accommodations, education, credit, volunteer fire departments, boycotts/blacklisting, and violations of conciliation agreements.

     

    Minimum Qualifications • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school, with a demonstrated interest in civil rights, employment law, or public interest law.• Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.• Excellent organizational and communication skills.• Familiarity with New York State Human Rights Law and anti-discrimination statutes is a plus but not required.• Commitment to public service and social justice.
