    Under general supervision, the Senior Maintenance Mechanic I (Plumber) performs a wide variety of journeyman level plumbing maintenance and installation work, including the laying out of jobs sufficiently complex to require advance planning and the maintenance of necessary supplies and records. Work is performed with considerable independence, but in most instances, results from written or oral instructions. The incumbent may function as a lead worker on specific projects or as part of a crew and may supervise a number of lower level maintenance and labor employees. The journeyman is fully proficient in the skills and practices of the trade, with the full knowledge of the principles, tools and techniques. The journeyman assists in the planning of repairs and alterations, making estimates of material costs and staffing requirements. Responsibilities also include determining methods, techniques, materials, and devices best suited to complete projects.

    The Senior Maintenance Mechanic I (Plumber):

    + Installs, repairs and maintains plumbing fixtures, work stands, toilets, showers, drains, sinks, radiators and other equipment requiring plumbing connections to ensure that equipment works efficiently and effectively;

    + Repairs and replaces piping systems, valves and fittings to extend the useful life of equipment and to keep the equipment operating properly;

    + Repairs and maintains a variety of plumbing connections, conveyances and systems; including high and low pressure steam systems for proper operation and to extend the useful life of the system;

    + Repairs, maintains and installs soldered and brazed connections, fittings, etc., so they will perform safely and efficiently;

    + Cuts and threads pipes so that pipes may be joined;

    + Pours leaded joints on sanitary lines to seal them so no leakage will occur;

    + Performs an immediate inspection in the event of a plumbing or related emergency and takes proper corrective action;

    + Clears sewer and plumbing stoppages;

    + Lays out jobs making rough plans and sketches when needed and interprets job orders, diagrams, specifications, etc.;

    + Maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe condition;

    + Maintains records of work done, supplies used and supplies needed, requisitions supplies;

    + Recommends new equipment and methods to improve work performance;

    + Performs routine and emergency repairs and maintenance, both scheduled and in response to emergency situations, as required;

    + Assists in securing information for budget formulation;

    + Depending on work location, may operate equipment and devices, participate in snow removal, etc., as assigned;

    + Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments;

    + May perform other incidental tasks, as needed.

    Job Requirements:

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess either:

    (a) High School or equivalency diploma and four years experience in the plumbing trade; OR

     

    (b) Four years full-time experience under a journeyman which provided training and experience equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. NOTE: Apprenticeship training in plumbing, or training gained by the completion of technical courses in the trade or at a school, institute or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

     

    Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology associated with the plumbing trade, as well as knowledge of appropriate codes and safety precautions, are necessary. The ability to work effectively with supervisory and subordinate personnel in carrying out the duties of the position is also necessary. It is also required that the successful candidate possess and maintain valid New York State driver's license.

     

    All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and evidence of equity-minded practice in all college policies, practices, and personnel.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: It is preferred that the candidate is currently working in the field as a plumber. It is preferred that the successful candidate has 1-2 years of experience working on repairing HVAC piping system, or 1-2 years of experience working alongside a steamfitter in repairing & replacing piping.

    Additional Information:

    POSITION EFFECTIVE: The position will remain open until filled.

     

    WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule is Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm.

     

    SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $61,592. Additional compensation with seniority steps maximize at a salary of $76,398.
