Duties: The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz invites applications for two Academic Advisors to work within and support our incredible Advancing Completion through Engagement (ACE) Program. ACE provides intensive academic advisement, career counseling, as well as tuition, textbook, and transportation assistance. ACE is a baccalaureate completion program based on the principles of the successful CUNY Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP). ACE is designed to increase timely graduation rates by removing the financial, academic, and personal obstacles that many students confront. Key ACE program features include a consolidated block schedule, small class size, required full-time study and comprehensive advisement and career development services. Financial incentives include cost of attendance awards for eligible students, textbook assistance, and monthly awards.
Reporting to the Director of the ACE Program, the ACE Advisor’s primary responsibility is to provide individualized academic advisement to ACE program students and to help support the coordination of these efforts with other advising programs at New Paltz.
As a member of an integrated University team, the advisor will provide individualized academic and personal support to an assigned group of ACE students as they progress through their degree program.
• Delivers comprehensive and holistic academic advisement support services to an assigned group of ACE students through degree completion.• Reviews student progress and tracks use of support services.• Conducts regular outreach to faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success.• Maintains accurate tracking data and notes for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs.• Supports semesterly recruitment of new students into the program.• Organizes and/or supports periodic special events and programs for students.• May conduct or support delivery of student seminars on issues of importance to students.• Represent the New Paltz ACE program as needed during events including but not limited to, accepted student open house and orientation.
Qualifications: Required:• Bachelor’s degree• A minimum of three years advising students in higher education; OR a combination of teaching and advising students in higher education for a minimum of three years.
Preferred:• Master’s degree• A minimum of 1 year advising students in an ASAP|ACE Program.• Knowledge of SUNY/CUNY ASAP|ACE Programs.• Experience teaching or facilitating classes or educational seminars with students in higher education.• Thorough understanding of Starfish, ARGOS, Banner, Microsoft products.
The ideal candidate will have the following skills:• Strong understanding of the needs of college students at various points during their academic careers.• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.• Demonstrated ability to work well with faculty and administrators.• Willingness to work limited evenings and weekends as needed.• Ability to enter, monitor and interpret student data accurately.• Excellent written and oral communications skills.• Experience in higher education working within an academic advising setting and with other university support services.• Excellent organization, communication, and facilitation skills.• Strong computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office; Starfish, Argos and Banner
