Job Information
Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This position is represented by the Public Employees, Local 71, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.
DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
HOURS OF WORK: W ork schedule will vary based on department needs; 4 10's Monday - Sunday 6 am - 4:30 pm
Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Applicants shall be referred and considered for this position in the order as follows per the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

+ External applicants and other current Municipal employees not covered under this agreement
Example of Duties
The purpose of this position is to beautify Anchorage parks and streetscapes and to maintain its natural resources. The Gardener II
is required to perform more skilled assignments and lead the lower level Gardener positions and volunteers. This position will be
assigned to one or more areas to act as a working lead in the preparation of flower beds; in the maintenance, planting, irrigation of
trees, shrubs, turf, flower beds and hanging flower baskets; the cleaning and sanitation of the parks; and in general landscaping
and maintenance of parks, municipal facilities, and roadways. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and two (2) years of greenhouse, plant nursery, landscaper, gardener, grounds keeper, or other applicable experience
All applicants must possess and/or obtain:
- Valid State of Alaska commercial driver’s license, Class B (CDLB), with Tank endorsement, and satisfactory Driving Record at time of application.
- Satisfactory drug test at time of hire.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDLB) or higher, with Tank endorsement, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory drug screen prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information Forms. Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405 (f) and (h).
All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
As a condition of employment, the candidate selected must provide their Union Dispatch Referral Form by the time of hire.
Military Service Interview Preference
Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
