Join our team as a Full-Time Lead Pharmacy Technician! This position will work Monday through Friday, 12:00pm - 8:30pm. No weekends required!
UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is hiring a Full-Time Lead Pharmacy Technician to work evening shifts in our inpatient pharmacy at the main hospital in Lawrenceville. The Lead Pharmacy Technician provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by demonstrating proficiency in knowledge, skills, and leadership in a designated area of pharmacy operations.
Title and Rate of pay will be based on education and experience.
A Sign-On Bonus of $5,000 is available for eligible candidates in exchange of a 2-year work commitment with UPMC.
Primary Responsibilities:
+ Lead responsibility for sterile products, RobotRX operations, general pharmacy operations, operating room support, non‑sterile packaging, and controlled substances
+ Coordinate daily activities with pharmacists and management while mentoring and training new technicians
+ Develop and implement policies, procedures, and workflow improvements to enhance patient care and pharmacy efficiency
+ Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, Joint Commission standards, and hospital/department policies
+ Lead quality improvement initiatives and evaluate pharmaceutical care using operational and patient‑care indicators
+ Provide technical leadership in medication preparation and oversee daily workflow, duties, and productivity tools in designated areas
+ Train technicians and assess competency in designated pharmacy areas
+ Assist with procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational and study drugs
+ Provide effective communication, service excellence, and professional interactions with staff, patients, and hospital personnel
+ Develop and maintain workflow guidelines, policies, procedures, and regulatory readiness; ensure designated areas remain clean and well‑maintained
+ Support new initiatives, share technical knowledge, and foster collaboration among associates
+ Perform cash‑handling duties and finalize sales according to policy
+ Prepare required reports and maintain a professional image while demonstrating strong knowledge of controlled substance regulations
+ Maintain accurate controlled‑substance records, perform audits, and ensure compliant storage and dispensing
+ Demonstrate competency in sterile products, IV admixtures, controlled substances, robot operations, packaging, and operating room processes
+ Complete departmental documentation and billing accurately each shift
+ Participate in medication distribution, including cassettes, emergency carts, and controlled‑substance delivery
+ Maintain required documentation such as eye‑wash logs, refrigerator logs, and perpetual inventories; maintain patient records and pharmacy computer systems
+ Manage inventory levels in stock rooms, medication carousels, and automated dispensing machines
+ Ensure safe and compliant medication storage across all areas; comply with HIPAA, OSHA, FWA, CMS, and other regulatory requirements
+ Assist in filling medication orders through accurate labeling, counting, stocking, and product dating
+ Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required
+ Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program required
+ Five years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Operation Specialist required
+ Demonstrate competency in all detailed aspects of the Lead Pharmacist Technician's area
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
+ Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required
+ Act 31, 33, 34, & 73 clearances with renewal
