    JOB SUMMARY

    The Heavy Equipment Operator II is the second level in the series and begins the heavy equipment operation and focuses on learning to operate non-CDL heavy equipment in support of public works projects. Employees in this role work under close to moderate supervision and are expected to perform both manual labor and equipment operation tasks. The position provides opportunities to gain hands-on experience with tools, trucks, and equipment while supporting the daily operations of the Public Works department. Work often involves road maintenance, utility support, and community infrastructure projects. Operators also assist in ensuring safe work practices are followed at all times. This position helps employees build a foundation for growth into higher-level equipment operator roles.

    MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    + Operates light to heavy non-CDL equipment such as loaders and backhoes.

    + Drives trucks of varying sizes for hauling gravel, sand, or equipment.

    + Assists in ditch digging, pipe laying, and vault cleaning.

    + Supports maintenance and repair of water mains and hydrants.

    + Performs daily inspections and routine servicing of assigned equipment.

    + Follows established safety practices and ensures safe work zones.

    + Removes debris and obstructions from roads and ditches.

    + Transports materials and tools to and from job sites.

    + Assists senior operators with more complex equipment tasks.

    + Learns proper excavation methods and utility location awareness.

    + Completes simple documentation of work performed each day.

    + Provides general labor support during emergencies or urgent repairs.

    + Works as part of a team to complete construction and maintenance tasks.

    + Participates in on-the-job training to gain higher level skills.

    + Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

    EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Required:

    + A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.

    + Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience in construction or public works is required.

    SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    This position requires frequent physical activity and outdoor work in varied weather conditions. Employees must regularly stand, walk, bend, and use their hands to operate tools and controls. Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds is expected on a regular basis, with heavier loads occasionally handled with assistance. The work often involves stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing in and out of equipment. Operators must have the visual ability to judge distances, maintain depth perception, and adjust focus while working with moving machinery. The job requires stamina to perform extended hours of physical labor in noisy, dusty, or wet environments. Employees will frequently be exposed to vibration, fumes, and rough terrain. Clear hearing and coordination are necessary to ensure safe operation of vehicles and equipment in active work zones.

    Must have a current and valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
