    JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision, provides entry level professional support in environmental services

     

    POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES: Under close supervision as an entry level professional, learn the processes employed by the Department for evaluating the ecological effects of proposed transportation projects. Duties include learning to perform habitat analyses, conduct protected species surveys, and delineate streams & wetlands. Once ecological resources are identified, learn to coordinate with designers to avoid and minimize impacts to ecological resources. Once an alternative is identified, learn to prepare reports in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations and coordinate with state and federal agencies to obtain approval in advance of project construction. Also learn to review documentation prepared by environmental consultants.

     

    Obtain a basic knowledge of state and federal laws related to ecological resources, specifically the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation & Management Act, the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Georgia Wildflower Preservation Act, and the Georgia Endangered Wildlife Act. As an entry level professional with the Georgia Department of Transportation, also gain a basic understanding of transportation planning and engineering principles.

    Additional duties include:

    • Make correct inferences from available information and select the appropriate rule, policy, or procedure to follow.

    • Work effectively with others to find mutually acceptable solutions.

    • Travel statewide with occasional overnight stay.

    • Occasional work after normal business hours, as needed.

    • Other duties, as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Minimum Qualifications

    STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of job-related experience.

    AGENCY SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Biology, Entomology, Botany, Zoology, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Wildlife, or a closely related field.

    • Committed to providing quality customer service.

    • Possesses competency in gathering, interpreting, analyzing, and summarizing information for the purpose of writing technical reports, summaries, and/or correspondence.

    • Strong oral communication skills, expresses ideas and facts to individuals or groups effectively.

    • Possesses the eye hand eye coordination, physical strength and agility necessary to perform the core responsibilities of the job.

    • Ability to make sound, well-informed decisions.

    • Ability to effectively apply new knowledge and skills in work performed.

    • Ability to adapt quickly to change including new policies and procedures; to work and interact with internal and external personnel in a professional and courteous manner.

    • Ability to effectively manage own time while dealing with multiple priorities.

    • Displays a high level of commitment toward work and a high standard of ethical conduct.

    AGENCY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Demonstrated experience collecting environmental data (i.e., academic or work-related) that requires collaboration with others, the analysis of data/results, and compiling information into written format.

    • Basic knowledge of ecological principles.

    • Basic knowledge of legislation such as the Endangered Species Act and Clean Water Act.

    • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices.

    • Experience identifying plants and animals in the Southeastern United States.

    • Experience assessing habitat for and surveying for threatened or endangered species.

    • Experience in delineating wetlands and streams.

    • Demonstrated ability to perform field studies under challenging conditions, including but not limited to inclement weather, extreme heat, and steep terrain.

    • Demonstrated ability in reviewing and editing technical documentation.

    • Ability to develop new methods/procedures where established methods are inapplicable or unavailable.

    • Basic knowledge and understanding of the goals, objectives, or policies of the Department related to the construction of transportation projects.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL GDOT JOBS

    Good Employment Standing:

    In accordance with the Interview and Selection Process (ISP), an applicant must have no active disciplinary actions to be in good employment standing. Actions that may disqualify an applicant include letters of reprimand (active for 12 months after issuance date); suspension without pay or disciplinary demotion (active for 12 months from the effective date); Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and Leave Restriction Plans (active until 12 months after the date of conclusion). In addition, an employee must have an overall ePerformance rating score of three (3) or higher on their most current evaluation. Please note that Memorandums of Concern are not considered disqualifying factors. Human Resources may remove any employee from consideration for selection who is pending a disciplinary action; however, if the action is resolved in the employee’s favor, he or she will be allowed to compete.
