Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Student Cybersecurity Analyst / Penetration Tester to join our lab. This position is ideal for undergraduate students who are passionate about cybersecurity, secure software development, and offensive security testing, and who want to apply those skills in a dynamic research environment. The role involves assessing and improving the security of web-based applications and systems that support theRFID Lab’s research activities, helping streamline and optimize processes, reduce manual effort, and improve efficiency across teams—while ensuring systems are robust, reliable, and secure.
Essential Functions
+ Perform security assessments and penetration tests on web applications, APIs, and internal tools used to supportRFID Lab research workflows.
+ Develop and maintain secure-by-design features, including authentication, authorization, logging, and input validation.
+ Assist with secure integration of computational tools, databases, and third-party services (including secrets management and secure configuration practices).
+ Ensure the robustness and reliability of web applications, including monitoring and incident-aware logging where applicable.
+ Perform data collection and data analysis to investigate the performance of large-scaleRFID deployments.

Minimum Qualifications
• Currently enrolled as an Auburn University undergraduate student.
• Majoring in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Must have reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
_Expectations:_
+ Programming skills with experience in application development and/or scripting.
+ Experience with web applications and frameworks (NextJS, Remix, Vite/React) and common web security risks and mitigations.
+ Familiarity with penetration testing methodologies and tools (e.g., Burp Suite or similar web proxy tooling, basic network scanning/diagnostics).
+ Experience working with databases (SQL , NoSQL) and understanding of common database security issues (injection risks, access control, least privilege).
+ Knowledge of authentication/authorization concepts (sessions,JWT /OAuth basics), secure coding practices, and vulnerability remediation.
+ Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
+ Strong communication skills and a willingness to engage with non-technical team members.
+ Knowledge of data visualization tools and libraries is a plus.
+ Technically capable with the ability to quickly become familiar with hardware, software, processes and new technologies is a plus
+ Basic Knowledge of RF systems and computer networks is a plus.
