Job Description
MAIN FUNCTION:
Responsible for coordination of orientation and teaching of new employees, ongoing in-service programs and coordination of simulations/drills for educational purposes. Supports the Unit Director and Clinical Coordinators in carrying out Perinatal unit goals. Informs the Unit Director of staff educational needs or staff educational compliance concerns.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
+ Reports to the Unit Director and assumes responsibility for the Coordination of nursing education in cooperation with the Clinical Coordinators.
+ Is responsible for maintenance of equipment and supplies used for simulation and drills.
+ Collaborates with the Unit Director and Clinical Coordinators on educational programs and required updates.
+ Assists the Unit Director and Clinical Coordinators with coordination of new staff orientation and on-going competency of staff.
+ Assists the Unit Director with departmental Quality Improvement activities related to staff education as assigned by Unit Director.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Nursing Process
+ Schedules weekly staff education based on unit and staff needs on day and evening and occasional weekend shifts.
+ Supervises staff during educational activities and provides feedback to individuals and the Unit Director regarding progress.
+ Evaluates effectiveness of education through evaluation of programs provided and through staff feedback process.
Knowledge Base
+ Demonstrates sound knowledge base, skill level and decision making related to area of practice.
Patient/Staff Education
+ Collaborates with Unit Director and Clinical Coordinators in assessing and planning educational programs for staff.
Documentation
+ Is role model based on the nursing process and Arnot Behavior Standards.
+ Participates in auditing documentation and competency/compliance and provides staff education accordingly.
Safety/Legal
+ Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to regulatory, safety and legal requirements established at the Medical Center and Division of Nursing level with emphasis on those pertinent to his/her unit.
Committee Work
+ Participates in unit based, Division of Nursing and Medical Center committees.
+ Acts as Chair of the Perinatal Education Committee and is responsible for monthly meeting minutes and action plans.
Policy
+ Assists the Unit Director in development and enforcement of unit, Division of Nursing and Medical Center policies related to staff education, simulation and drills.
Quality Assurance
+ Assists the Unit Director in evaluating nursing care on the unit for quality, appropriateness and economy.
+ Assists the Unit Director with annual and ongoing performance evaluations of unit employees.
+ Assists the Unit Director with maintaining supplies and equipment status, budget development and ensuring accurate charges.
+ Maintains a good knowledge base of JCAHO/DNV, ACOG/AWHONN standards and other regulatory requirements and ensures unit compliance with the standards.
Working Relationships
+ Develops and maintains effective working relationships with the staff, Unit Director, Clinical Coordinators, providers and other members of the health team.
Leadership
+ Is able to delegate and coordinate effectively.
+ Is a resource person for the nursing staff; assisting in development of the staff.
+ Performs competently in emergencies and new situations.
Problem Solving
+ Is able to problem solve and facilitate problem solving in other staff.
Education
+ Assumes responsibility for meeting self-learning needs using formal and informal resources.
+ Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification or within 3 months of hire.
+ OB in-patient or similar specialty certification preferred.
+ Clinical II designation preferred.

Other
+ Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.
+ Provides age appropriate care to patient according to their age groups for the particular unit to which the individual is assigned.
+ Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Medical Center.

EDUCATION:
Current NYS nursing licensure. Current NRP and AWHONN Fetal Monitoring course current OR required within 3 months. NCC certification in Inpatient OB Nursing and EFM desirable. BSN preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Meets Medical Center employment criteria. Minimum 5 years experience in acute hospital setting with minimum 5 years in the Perinatal clinical area. Meets Medical Center employment criteria. BSN, Clinical Nurse II or clinical ladder preferred. Experience in using simulation/drills for simulation based education required.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Must have or obtain NRP and BLS instructor certification within 3 months of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Appreciable physical effort required. Some lifting, reaching and stooping. Required to be on feet much of the time.
INFECTION CONTROL:
Performs all aspects of universal precautions when engaging in patient care.
EXPOSURE CATEGORY:
Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
