The Worldwide Sustainability (WWS) organization capitalizes on Amazon’s scale and speed to build a more resilient and sustainable company. We manage our social and environmental impacts globally, and drive solutions that enable our customers, businesses, and the world to become more sustainable.
The Worldwide Environment team (focusing on waste, water, circularity and biodiversity) utilizes science-based approaches to lower Amazon’s environmental impact in the areas of waste, water, and biodiversity across the operations of our business units and products, making meaningful and measurable impacts in the communities in which we operate.
We are seeking a Principal Sustainability Specialist for Commodities within the Worldwide Sustainability (WWS) organization, you will serve as a deep subject matter expert (SME) in commodity supply chains, with particular focus on agricultural commodities.
You will use broad expertise across supply chain traceability, sourcing practices, and regional risks, to define strategies to measure, abate, and evaluate environmental and social tradeoffs, giving businesses a holistic picture of their impacts in commodity sourcing.
Key job responsibilities
- Serve as a company expert on commodity supply chains, their environmental impacts (across carbon, water, and biodiversity), and risk mitigation strategies (including certifications) and lead the global dissemination of sustainability guidance for commodity sourcing
- Collaborate with central and BU finance teams to develop comprehensive 3-5 year strategic plans to improve sourcing practices
- Collaborate with Tech to develop tools for commodity impact and risk measurement and abatement scenario analysis, integrating into existing business unit facing tooling as appropriate
- Use data from pilot programs to develop long-term company-wide targets that scale successful initiatives
- Gain senior leadership alignment on sustainability targets to motivate investment by WWS and BUs
- Design multi-business, multi-region KPIs for commodities to track progress and impact
- Advise businesses to ensure compliance with current regulations and look around corners for expanding regional and local regulations

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Sustainability, Supply Chain Management, or related field
- 8+ years of experience in sustainability or related roles, with 5+ years of experience on agricultural commodity supply chains
- Broad knowledge across supply chain traceability, sourcing practices, certification schemes, regional risks, and environmental tradeoffs
- Strong understanding of current and emerging sustainability regulations affecting commodity sourcing
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing competing priorities and using metrics to drive business decisions
- Master's degree or PhD in Sustainability, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in sustainability roles with increasing responsibility and depth of expertise
- Experience gaining executive-level buy-in for sustainability initiatives
- Experience developing and implementing sustainability tools and systems at scale

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $149,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $247,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
