About the Governor's Summer Internship Program:
The summer internship program allows participants to work with state agency officials and participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experiences. Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on predetermined projects that enhance college-level skills and abilities. The co-curricular components of the program ensure competitive, reputable, and inclusive experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort weekly activities designed to enable:
+ Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation
+ Exposure to many facets of state government
+ Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort
About the Indiana Geographic Information Office (IGIO):
The IGIO facilitates developing, maintaining, distributing, and using comprehensive statewide geographic data and geospatial technology to empower governments, universities, and businesses to address issues affecting Indiana’s physical, economic, and social well-being. We:
+ Coordinate geospatial efforts between and among federal, state, and local governments.
+ Integrate GIS data developed and maintained by state agencies and political subdivisions into a statewide base map.
+ Develop and maintain statewide framework data layers associated with a statewide base map (orthoimagery, elevation, cadastre/parcels, PLSS, geodetic controls, addresses, street centerlines, government boundaries, and many more
+ Provide public access to GIS and framework data in locations throughout Indiana.
About the Geospatial Data Scientist Intern:
The Geospatial Data Intern supports the Indiana Geographic Information Office (IGIO) by exploring and creating derived datasets from existing datasets, such as natural color and infrared imagery, lidar point clouds, digital elevation models, and more. The IGIO relies on Esri software, but the use of open-source libraries is possible.
Sample projects include:
+ Identifying relevant datasets.
+ Preparing and processing the data for analysis.
+ Developing algorithms and models to interpret or synthesize geospatial data.
+ Verifying results of the analysis.
+ Collaborate with team members to integrate geospatial data into larger projects and to make it available, as appropriate, on enterprise GIS systems.
+ Documenting and presenting findings and methods used.
Our desired candidate profile:
+ Prefer an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student.
+ Degree concentrations in Geography, GIS, remote sensing, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Data Science, Informatics, Natural Science, image analysis, or similar fields.
+ Experience with geospatial data analysis using a variety of data formats.
Salary:
The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
+ Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
+ Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
+ Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
+ Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
+ Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

What You'll Need for Success:
+ Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
+ Academic work in related field
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
+ Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
+ Ability to conduct well-informed research
+ Ability to solve complex, critical problems
+ Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality
+ Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
