    Position: Mental Health Provider - OWL Elementary (Posting number 2526-3575)

     

    Start Date: ASAP

     

    Position Summary: Provide comprehensive school social work services to parents, students and school staff, addressing barriers that limit a student from receiving full benefit from their educational experience. Respond to referrals from school administration, parents, teachers, the Student Support Team, the Special Education Committee and others by providing direct services and by assisting families in accessing appropriate community resources.

     

    Requirements: An individual filling this position must hold a New York State Certification as a School Social Worker OR School Psychologist.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    Evaluation

     

    + Provide suicide assessments/evaluation

    + Complete social histories as part of evaluation team and document attempts to meet with families

    + Uses assessment skills to determine the needs of students.

    + Actively participate in various meetings with families, school teams, and multiple agencies as needed

     

    Collaboration/Communication

     

    + Collaborate with all school personnel to assess student's social/emotional obstacles to academic success

    + Consult with therapists, doctors, parents, child protective, law guardians, family court

    + Collaborate with school teams to develop and monitor Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, Functional Behavioral Assessments, and behavior plans

    Training/Education

    + Provide classroom discussions and presentations

    + Serve as a liaison between home and school in providing parent education and counseling, as appropriate.

     

    Student Services

     

    + Provide suicide assessments/evaluation

    + Link students and families with school and community resources

    + Make home visits as needed

    + Encourage and support families to effectively participate in their child's education

    + Help families understand school policies, services, and programs

    + Provide crisis intervention

    + Refer Child Protective cases

    + Make referrals to mental health agencies

    + Provide Individual and group counseling of students and as indicated on student IEPs

    + Assist families in meeting the needs of students, e.g. housing, clothing, adaptive equipment, medical services, recreation, child/respite care and other special needs.

     

    Other

     

    + District crisis team member

    + Assist in school-wide attendance initiatives and report on collected data

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge and skills for direct and indirect intervention including: counseling on an individual, group, or family basis; consulting with administrators, teachers, parents, and other professionals about student problems and appropriate change strategies; and networking with school programs and community agencies to provide essential services for families and children; understanding of the knowledge, skills, and processes for effective casework practice; understanding of the school social work profession including associated laws (IDEA, ADA, compulsory attendance, etc.), ethical issues, professional issues and standards; foundations of school psychology; and the role and function of the school social worker; understanding of child development, psychopathology, social and environmental conditioning, cultural diversity and family systems.

     

    Salary: As per current Webster Teachers Contract, education and experience.
