Description
The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, in the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), at Texas A&M University (TAMU) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month/year, academic professional track non-tenure position at the rank of clinical assistant professor or clinical associate professor in Equine Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. Applicants must be committed to a team-centered atmosphere and possess excellent communication skills with horse owners, faculty colleagues, veterinary students, house officers, technicians, and hospital staff. Anticiapted start date of Spring 2026.
The faculty hire will be expected to devote approximately 60% effort to patient care and clinical teaching with the remaining effort divided between pre-clinical teaching, service, and scholarly activites (if desired).
1. Patient care: Patient care responsibilities will be conducted on the Equine Orthopedic Surgery and Equine Sports Medicine services. These services are building toward a multi-member faculty team with responsibility for a wide variety of equine cases including lameness, sports medicine, orthopedics, and rehabilitation. Collectively, as one of the busiest clinical areas in the Large Animal Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (LA-VMTH), these services provide patient care for a diverse caseload including primary opinion and referral cases representing a wide spectrum of horse breeds and disciplines. Western performance and English performance horses are most common. Faculty colleagues share clinical duties on a rotational basis. Each service is staffed with a cohort of full-time technicians and is supported by a consistent team of surgery residents and interns. The robust orthopedic and sports medicine caseload consists of a wide variety of conditions ranging from primary diagnostic lameness assessment, referral advanced diagnostic imaging, performance horse management, and orthopedic trauma. The services receive both elective and emergency cases, with all surgeons sharing in after-hours and holiday coverage. Clinical services are supported by a strong team in diagnostic imaging with digital radiography, Computed Tomography, 3T MRI, and nuclear medicine capabilities. Five operating suites accommodate orthopedic, soft tissue, and colic cases as well as separate standing surgery suites for laparoscopy/laser surgery and dental procedures. An intensive care unit and isolation facility are available to all clinicians and are fully staffed 24 hours per day and 365 days per year. Outdoor facilities include a covered riding arena and non-climate-controlled stalls.
2. Teaching: Teaching responsibilities include instruction of didactic courses for students in the integrated and highly experiential pre-clinical veterinary curriculum, clinical instruction of fourth-year veterinary students on the Equine Orthopedic Surgery and Equine Sports Medicine rotations, and mentorship of veterinary students. The faculty member will participate in the clinical training of surgery residents, interns, and veterinary students. Experiential and innovative techniques and clinical case material are used to teach veterinary students. The successful candidate will be expected to develop well-organized, creative, and interactive lectures and laboratory materials. Additionally, the faculty member will be expected to be an excellent role model and mentor to veterinary students with interests in the equine industry.
3. Service: The faculty member will contribute to departmental camaraderie and a positive workplace through participation in academic service. Additionally, faculty members are encouraged to pursue service opportunities within their specialty colleges, veterinary medical organizations, and other professional organizations. Faculty members are expected to commit to holding themselves and colleagues accountable to the VMBS Code of Professional Conduct (https://vetmed.tamu.edu/dean/vmbs-code-of-professional-conduct) .
4. Research and Scholarly Activity: If desired, the faculty member will have opportunities to engage in collaborative research and scholarly activity. Existing research programs in the department include equine orthopedics, regenerative therapies, infectious disease, equine reproduction, novel drug delivery systems, colic and reperfusion injury, antibiotic resistance, and sepsis. Faculty members are encouraged to engage in Scholarship of Integration by provision of Continuing Education activities locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences includes nearly 50 faculty members with diverse backgrounds and scholarly interests. Clinical units include Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Orthopedic Surgery, Equine Soft Tissue Surgery, Equine Sports Medicine, Equine Theriogenology, Equine Field Services, Equine Community Practice, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, and Diagnostic Imaging. The VMBS is located in the community of Bryan–College Station (BCS), a growing college town with a variety of cultural and recreational opportunities, excellent schools, and a relatively low cost of living. BCS is centered in the Texas Triangle, a region consisting of the state’s five largest cities, all of them with international airports (Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio).
