    SMUD serves more than 1.4 million customers in the Sacramento area and operates the Upper American River Project (UARP), a large hydroelectric system with 11 reservoirs and 9 powerhouses along the American River basin. As our most efficient and eco-friendly source of power, the UARP delivers clean energy with a total capacity of 732 megawatts (MW), supplying approximately 20% of our customers' electricity during peak demand. As a community-owned, not-for-profit utility, SMUD has been dedicated to providing low-cost, reliable electricity for over 70 years.

     

    We are seeking an Asset Supervisor to join our Power Generation department at our hydro operations facility located off Highway 50, approximately 60 miles east of Sacramento (15 miles east of Placerville). You will provide leadership for specialized technical teams, including Electrical Technicians who install and maintain relays, protective systems, and control equipment; Hydro Operators who manage multi-facility hydroelectric plants, manage high-voltage switching, and system responses; and Hydro Field Technicians who maintain and calibrate hydro-meteorological equipment and field instrumentation, and collect operational data from field sites.

     

    In addition to cultivating a positive and productive working environment, navigating strongly held viewpoints or challenging operational situations, you will be responsible for upholding the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance. The Asset Supervisor will require an understanding of NERC PRC-005-6 maintenance and testing standards for protective relaying (generators, transmission lines, and transformers), voltage and current sensing devices, control circuitry, station service, and station DC supply systems. You will be responsible for scheduling maintenance of NERC-related devices within specified intervals under PRC-005-6, ensuring records of completion and evidence of testing are stored in SMUD's work order management systems.

     

    The ideal candidate has a solid background in hydro operations, proven experience leading maintenance and operational teams, and a talent for inspiring collaboration among multidisciplinary groups. While direct expertise in every technical trade is not required, success in this position depends on a comprehensive knowledge of hydroelectric operations, guiding multidisciplinary teams, and promoting collaboration among staff with diverse skillsets and perspectives. Working closely with the Manager of Generation Maintenance and fellow asset supervisors, you will be part of a team that works together to maintain the safe, compliant, and reliable performance of SMUD's hydroelectric facilities.

     

    Purpose

     

    To supervise, direct, plan, organize, and document the preventative and corrective maintenance and construction activities for Power Generation assets.

     

    Nature and Scope

     

    Leads in the development, implementation and coordination/oversight of Power Generation goals, objectives, processes and priorities in partnership with department leadership; selects, trains, mentors, motivates, evaluates and develops staff and ensures that department strategic objectives and priorities are achieved and coordinated with other departments.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    + Collaborates with fellow Assets Supervisors, Management and work schedulers to implement and direct operational activities including: making crew assignments, assigning work crews, preparing and issuing work packages for completion of maintenance, repair, modifications and additions to ensure successful outcomes; while maintaining a successful culture of safety, compliance and engagement.

    + Collaborates with other functional areas for planned outage scheduling and to ensure systems are fully operational and in compliance with all safety practices and in compliance with applicable standards.

    + Tracks, analyzes and reports work history and maintains work management applications as necessary.

    + Assists in budget preparation, implementation and adherence; participates in the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies.

    + Serves as a rotational on-call supervisor for hours outside of normal work hours.

    + Performs other related duties as required.

    Required Education

    + High School diploma or equivalent

    Required Experience Qualifications

    + Five or more (5+) years of directly related and progressively responsible relevant work experience performing power generation maintenance or construction in a lead or supervisory capacity.

     

    Required Licenses/Certificates

     

    Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License CDL and a satisfactory driving record not more than two moving violations in the last two years

     

    Knowledge Of

     

    Methods, materials, and equipment used in maintenance and construction of power generation assets; techniques and requirements for pre-and post-maintenance inspection and testing of plant components; principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluation' principles and practices of research analysis, reporting and supervision; principles and practices of budget development, implementation, and monitoring; principles and practices of work and resource planning; pertinent local, State, Federal rules, regulations and laws; applicable policies, practices, MOU’s and procedures; modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment

     

    Skills To

     

    Supervise and direct others to analyze and diagnose power generation asset operational problems and direct repair as needed; lead department processes and programs to ensure safe and effective processes; analyze budget and technical reports Interpret and evaluate staff reports; review and comprehend and enforce applicable laws, regulations, rules, procedures, policies and codes; observe performance and evaluate staff; prioritize and problem-solve department-related issues; apply various rules and procedures; and explain and interpret policy; analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals; communicate effectively both orally and in writing

    Desirable Qualifications

    + Two (2) or more years' experience supervising or leading technical teams in a hydroelectric generation environment.

    + Direct experience with the application, installation, or maintenance of power generation protective relays, control systems, and high-voltage switching procedures.

    + Demonstrated working knowledge of NERC PRC-005-6 maintenance and testing standards, including experience scheduling, documenting, and verifying maintenance or testing of protection systems and related devices.

    + Experience utilizing enterprise work order management or electronic document management systems (such as SAP & Documentum) to record and track maintenance and testing evidence for regulatory compliance.

    + Documented proficiency in interpreting and reviewing electrical and mechanical schematics, system diagrams, and technical documentation.

    + Two (2) or more years' hands-on experience coordinating maintenance or outage activities, including leading multi-disciplinary teams, and collaborating with cross-functional groups such as engineering, operations, or field crews.

    + Proven track record of promoting a safety-conscious culture and ensuring teams follow safe work practices.

    + Experience developing, implementing, and adapting operational processes and procedures for hydroelectric generation facilities, with demonstrated flexibility in responding to changing conditions, operational emergencies, and participating in on-call or rotational supervisory duties.
