Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Accountant to join our nonprofit organization's finance team. The Senior Accountant will play a pivotal role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance, and effective management of financial operations. Ideal candidates will have a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting standards, excellent analytical skills, and a commitment to supporting the organization's mission-driven goals. This role also requires experience in developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures to strengthen financial controls and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Operations:
+ Manage Accounts: Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash flow, and general ledger maintenance.
+ Reconciliation: Handle bank and account reconciliations to identify discrepancies and maintain accuracy in financial reporting.
Budgeting & Reporting:
+ Budget Management: Assist in the development, monitoring, and adjustments of the organization's annual budget.
+ Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze quarterly and annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
+ Grant Reporting: Track, report, and facilitate compliance with grant agreements and donor-specific financial requirements.
Compliance & Auditing:
+ Regulation Adherence: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including tax filings and Form 990 preparation.
+ Audit Support: Lead preparations for external audits by organizing data and liaising with auditors as needed.
Accounting Policies & Procedures:
+ Policy Development: Create and implement accounting policies and procedures to align financial operations with legal, regulatory, and organizational standards.
+ Documentation: Maintain detailed internal controls documentation, outlining accounting processes to support consistency and accuracy.
+ Training: Provide guidance and training to the finance team and other relevant staff on updated policies, procedures, and financial best practices.
Process Improvement:
+ Evaluate and enhance financial processes, systems, and internal controls to improve operational efficiency.
+ Collaborate cross-functionally with departments to provide financial insights and guidance for organizational goals.
Collaboration:
+ Serve as a strategic partner to the leadership team, providing insights to support decision-making and operational planning.
+ Work closely with program managers to ensure accurate use of funding and alignment with the organization's mission.
Requirements
Required Qualifications:
+ Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
+ Experience: Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience; prior experience in a nonprofit setting is strongly preferred.
+ Skills:
+ Strong proficiency in nonprofit accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Nonprofit, Blackbaud Financial Edge).
+ Advanced knowledge of Excel and other financial tools for data analysis.
+ Familiarity with ERP systems and proficiency in compliance reporting.
Preferred Skills and Traits:
+ Knowledge and experience with fund accounting principles.
+ Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and accuracy in financial analyses.
+ Knowledge of grant management and restricted fund accounting.
+ Ability to develop and document accounting policies and procedures effectively.
+ A proactive approach to identifying and solving accounting process gaps.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively across departments.
+ A genuine passion for supporting nonprofit missions through effective financial stewardship.
