    Responsibilities

    The Clinical Anatomy Specialist provides operational support for the Mayo Clinic Body Donation Program (MCBDP) and the interface between the MCBDP and the Clinical Anatomy Laboratory (CAL). Provides an operational perspective for program decisions. This includes being an informational resource for individuals interested in whole body donation; responding to and triaging death notifications during and after regular business hours and on an on-call basis; communicating with donor families and health care professionals; determining whether donors can be accepted into the MCBDP; arranging for donor collection, transportation and delivery and processing death certificates; and processing body donors and managing the inventory of body donor tissue. The Clinical Anatomy Specialist maintains communication with families as required during the time donors are in the care of the MCBDP and arranges for final disposition of body donors, including processing of remains and return or

     

    internment of ashes.

     

    The Clinical Anatomy Specialist performs a variety of key functions in support of the Department of Clinical Anatomy, the MCBDP and the Clinical Anatomy Laboratory (CAL). These functions may include, but not be limited to, the following duties as assigned:

     

    1. Responding to enquiries from prospective donors, registered donors and their families by phone, mail and email and communicating policies and procedures.

    2. Working with donor families, state officials, funeral homes, healthcare facilities and medical professionals to obtain medical records where possible and coordinate the review and acceptance or denial of donors into the MCBDP.

    3. Coordinating with transportation service providers to facilitate transition of donors to Mayo Clinic.

    4. Coordinating with external providers of donor tissue to facilitate receipt, processing and return of external donor tissue.

    5. Generating death and donation documents as required by law and Mayo Clinic policies.

    6. Preparation of body donor material and surgical environments for educational, clinical and research activities conducted in the CAL and other approved Mayo Clinic locations. This includes initial receiving,portioning, embalming, harvesting, labeling, transporting, storing, care, reclaiming, final disposition and proper record keeping of human specimens, always ensuring that the cadaveric material is treated with the utmost dignity and respect.

    7. Coordination and management of body donor tissue inventory to ensure optimal, maximal and appropriate use in accordance with Mayo Clinic policies and procedures and utilizing relevant information system.

    8. Working with Anatomy Laboratory Technicians to help support CAL activities, including preparing the environment, care and operation of equipment, instrument set-up, cleaning and sterilization, assisting with surgical procedures and re-setting following an activity. These activities may occur and require support outside of the regular working day, most commonly evenings and weekends.

    9. Supporting the donor disposition process, including cremation by external funeral homes and internal cremation by alkaline hydrolysis.

    10. Facilitating the return of cremated remains to donor families or internment of remains in the Mayo Clinic vault.

    11. Assisting with scheduling laboratory space and donor tissue and the associated internal billing and external contracting process.

    12. Assisting with the annual Convocation of Thanks for donor families.

    13. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

    **Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.

    Qualifications

    A bachelor's degree in a life science or healthcare related field is required, preferably in Mortuary science or surgical

     

    services. A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in the field of surgery within a hospital or clinical setting, in a

     

    funeral home environment or otherwise with cadaveric material is required. Excellent written and oral

     

    communication skills. Proficient computer skills. Proficient anatomical knowledge and experience with medical

     

    terminology. Experience working in an anatomical bequest program preferred.

    Demonstrates professionalism through the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain a

    high level of confidentiality. Ability to be flexible and adapt to unpredictable situations. Flexibility in work hours that

     

    includes occasional off hours, evenings and weekends. Excellent problem solving, communication and organizational

     

    skills.

     

    Valid driver's license required. Current Minnesota Funeral Directors Licensure preferred.

    Schedule Details

     

    Core hours are 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday with flexibility outside those times to meet business needs. This position requires rotational on-call hours in evenings and weekends.

     

    Weekend Schedule

     

    Weekend hours are required from time to time to support activities taking place in the Clinical Anatomy Laboratory as well as on-call hours supporting the Mayo Clinic Body Donation Program.
