    Job Description

    NYC Parks is the steward of over 30,000 acres of land 14 percent of New York City including more than 5,000 individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We look after 600,000 street trees, and two million more in parks.

     

    Environment and Planning division aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City Parks including green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group’s mission is to protect, restore, expand, and manage New York City’s over 12,000 acres of natural spaces and green infrastructure across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands.

     

    Employees who work for 6 months or longer are eligible for healthcare benefits. All seasonal employees earn sick and annual leave. All employees receive free membership to our recreation centers.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

    - Under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, provide planning, project, and technical support in the restoration, protection, and management of natural areas with a focus on freshwater wetland and aquatic habitats.

     

    - Coordinate and lead ecological and environmental monitoring in streams, freshwater wetlands, and lakes.

     

    - Manage a variety of monitoring and assessment and ecological restoration projects.

     

    - Supervise staff that assist in monitoring, site assessment, and data collection to support natural resource management.

     

    - Conduct wetland delineations to inform restoration and protection.

     

    - Support development of permit applications for ecological restoration and stormwater management.

     

    - Identify opportunities for freshwater wetland and lakeshore management, including stormwater management opportunities and capital and crew-led restoration projects.

     

    - Support senior staff in developing recommendations for natural resources management.

     

    - Use software, such as ArcGIS, Python, and R, to map, visualize, and analyze data.

     

    - Collaborate with multiple stakeholders in an interdisciplinary and governmental context to achieve project goals.

     

    - Prepare maps, technical reports, and presentations for technical and public audiences.

    Duration: October 2025 to June 30, 2026

    35 Hours per week.

     

    Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee of $91.00. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $101.25 background check fee.

    Qualifications

    1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.

    To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

    1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or

    2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or

    3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

    NOTE:

    Probationary Period

     

    Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
