    The University of Miami is home to nearly 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students from every state in the nation and 140 nations around the world. The Department of Housing and Residential Life is home to an extensive and diverse residential program featuring six residential communities. The cornerstone of the residential program is a system of four residential colleges that blend the Oxford and Cambridge tradition of live-in faculty with the American commitment to student development and academic success. Residential Colleges range in size from 400 – 850 students. The University also offers University Village, an apartment area housing approximately 800 upper-class students and our newly opened Lakeside Village offering suite/apartment style living that house approximately 1100 sophomore and above students.     Salary Range:

    $40,000 - $45,000

     

    General Description (Purpose and Function)

     

    The Residential Life Coordinator, Safety & Security is a live-on position responsible for the daily operational logistics and the development of student staff in the Department of Housing and Residential Life Safety & Security program. Reports to the Assistant Director of Residential Life, Safety and Security. In collaboration with the Assistant Director, assists in the day-to-day documentation review, monitors job performance, ensures adequate shift coverage, and facilitates training/recruitment efforts. Administrative operations include supervising student employees, oversight of reception area desk, scheduling and equipment management. This position serves as a member of the security management team who communicates and collaborates on a regular basis with the Assistant Director, the Residential Life Night Manager, and Security Coordinator. The position involves significant night work due to operations being overnight. The primary work hours for this position will be between 12pm – 12am Monday through Friday, averaging 40 hours a week. Weekly work will fluctuate during high periods of time including recruitment, training and opening. The Residential Life Coordinator, Safety & Security will work with the Assistant Director to create a flexible work schedule. This position involves significant night and some weekend work.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

    Student Development & Crisis Response

    + Directly supervises student employees, approximately 50 student staff members.

    + Leads in designing and implementing training workshops and staff development sessions for student staff.

    + Manages and coordinates all personnel functions including student employee relations, selection, and discipline.

    + Partners with the Assistant Director of Training & Recruitment and the Residential Life Office Manager to ensure the successful hiring and onboarding of all student staff.

    + Advises and counsels staff regarding personal and professional matters.

    + Maintains visibility and contact with student staff.

    + Promotes diversity awareness and appreciation through role modeling, supervision, programming, and training.

    + Available for significant night and weekend work pertinent to the position (hiring interviews, staff selections, training, staff meetings, etc.).

    + Serves as essential staff (Tier 1) during a hurricane or other campus wide emergency.

    + Completes other duties and special projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of Residential Life for Safety & Security.

    + Assumes weekday, weekend and holiday/vacation duty coverage of campus through serving in the professional staff on-call duty rotation to provide appropriate crisis response for all on campus residents.

    + Serves on the Student Affars Crisis Coordinator on call rotation (as needed)

    + Leads departmental collaborations with campus partners to develop and implement late night Alcohol, Drug and Safety engagement efforts for residential students.

    + Completes other duties and special projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of Residential Life for Safety & Security.

    Area Administration:

    + Ensures job performance standards are being met by reviewing nightly documentation completed by student Security staff.

    + Coordinate and document fire drills for all residential areas

    + Participates in and develops student staff training, selection, and recruitment.

    + Responsible for possessing in-depth knowledge of University and departmental systems.

    + Assists recruitment and selection processes for Security Assistants, Security Supervisors, Office Assistants and assists in the selection of HRL professional staff.

    + Works collaboratively with the Assistant Director on student staff performance evaluations and matters of staff discipline, coaching, and recognition.

    + Prepares and revises student staff policies and procedures, manuals, and safety & security publications as needed and ensures updates are made to all manuals annually.

    + Assist the Assistant Director in managing, updating and communicating the restricted access list to professional staff and update systems to reflect list.

    + Represents the Department of Housing and Residential Life on University committees, assumes leadership for various responsibilities of the department, participates fully in the professional activities of the Division of Student Affairs, and develops collaborative relationships with other offices in the division.

    + Establish communications and relationships with area and department professional staff to support residents and security operations.

    + Manages program-related expenditures and ensures compliance with University procurement policies.

    Scheduling Management:

    + Maintains oversight of student staff scheduling.

    + Assists with online timekeeping for student employees.

    + Coordinates staffing posts and other related logistics during intersession periods when the University is closed or operating on a limited schedule

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    + Principles of office management and supervision

    + Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills

    + Strong organizational skills with attention to detail

    + Advanced experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel – PowerPoint and Access a plus)

    + Skill in planning and coordinating clerical work

    + Skill in interpreting and applying departmental policies and procedures

    + Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships

    + Strong technical skills

    + Ability to manage and establish a budget

    Education Requirements:

    + Bachelor’s degree required.

    + Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field preferred.

    Work Experience Requirements:

    + A minimum of one (1) year experience managing crisis on college campus or similar is required.

    + A minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience working in a college or university housing and residential life setting or similarly applicable experience is preferred. Two years of graduate assistantship experience at 20 hours per week will correlate to 1 year of professional experience.

    + Experience with student staff supervision, emergency management, and crisis response is preferred.

    + Experience with working with a diverse student population, conflict management and resolution, and simultaneously managing responsibilities in varied capacities is preferred.

    + Experience and familiarity with working overnight hours, access control systems (CBORD & Onity), scheduling software (WhenIWork) and housing system software (StarRez) is beneficial to the position and preferred but not required.
