    Summary This position is located in a National Park Service Unit. The primary purpose of the position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Open to the first 65 applicants or until 01/01/2026 whichever comes first. Applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on closing day will be considered. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April-December but can be variable during these months. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2026. Responsibilities The major duties of the Seasonal Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749-010 position include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs all preventative maintenance, operational checks, repair, layout, installation, troubleshooting, tracing, locating defects, modification on and new existing secondary electrical systems from transformers to final connections park-wide. Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers, and lay out of such things as angles, arcs, and circles. Provides support in the areas of operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of various historic and non-historic buildings within the National Park Service. Constructs, alters, modifies, or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities. Performs painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon completion. Must determine roofing work to be completed, locating leaks and determining their cause and extent of damage, selecting the work method to be followed for repair, and determining and using a greater variety of roofing materials and accessories such as shingles, roofing felt, and asphalt. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. You are required to have a Valid State Drivers' License Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from chemicals. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749-10, without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation repair, etc. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, and artistic) Use of measuring instruments Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. Knowledge of materials Selective Factors: Selective factors are applied in addition to minimum qualifications. Applicants who do not meet a selective factor are ineligible for further consideration. The incumbent of this position must possess and maintain an EPA Section 608 of the Clean Air Act Certification card and EPA number. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects. The incumbent's clothing may become soiled from· grease, dust, and chemicals. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falling, bums, broken bones and chemical vapors, constant noise, rotating machinery, dust, grease, chemicals, oil, fumes and infectious blood pathogens when working in or about systems. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and bums from chemicals. The incumbent is required to wear prescribed safety equipment and to adhere to safety rules and regulations, and standards as set by OSHA and the Park's established Safety Plan. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework.
