    The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Roche.

Advances in AI, data, and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche’s Research and Early Development organizations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximizing these opportunities. The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness this transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide.

The Data and Digital Catalysts (DDC) department within the CS CoE is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence. The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making. We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that truly make every data point count. Reporting to the Domain Head for Lab Workflows & Data, this Principal Product Leader will play a key role in defining and executing the strategy for a family of products that are critical for drug discovery research.

The Lab Workflows & Data domain provides the end-to-end digital backbone for research design, experiment management, core lab execution, and assay data & insights. It spans hypothesis and study design (protocol authoring, approvals, ELN linkage), experiment and service orchestration (assay request intake, scheduling, capacity management, LIMS/LES execution), and the full sample and material lifecycle with automation, provenance, and chain-of-custody. The domain also delivers assay data & insights capabilities—standardized data ingestion, processing and secondary/tertiary pipelines, QC, lineage, harmonization, and analytics-ready datasets—underpinned by governed research master data, shared ontologies, and interoperable APIs.

As the Principal Product Leader for the Core Lab Workflows product family, you will set the strategy and deliver products that operationalize scientific intent across Roche’s shared and specialized core laboratories, including pathology, genomics, flow cytometry, and related assay platforms.

You will focus on the end-to-end lifecycle of a core lab service: structured assay request intake, sample and request processing, experiment execution, and timely delivery of high-quality results back to researchers. Working closely with core lab leaders, investigator labs, and research operations, you will translate scientific requirements into scalable, intuitive workflows that reduce friction for both requestors and lab staff.

A central responsibility of this role is ensuring that scientific and experimental context—such as research hypotheses, experimental variables, controls, acceptance criteria, and processing parameters—is captured as structured, validated metadata at the point of execution. This metadata must be consistently linked to samples, requests, instruments, automation, and ELN records using persistent identifiers (GUPRIs), enabling reproducibility, traceability, and downstream analytics and AI use.

Your roadmap will emphasize proactive intake and validation to minimize back-and-forth between investigators and core labs, tight integration with sample management, automation and analysis pipelines, and streamlined user experiences that shorten cycle time and reduce rework. Success will be measured by faster request-to-result timelines, clearer handoffs between teams, complete lineage and chain-of-custody, and the quality, completeness, and reusability of assay datasets.

This is an opportunity to have a direct and visible impact on how science gets done at Roche, working alongside world-class scientists to accelerate the discovery of transformative medicines.

    Key Accountabilities

+ Own the product strategy and roadmap for the Core Lab Workflows product family, covering assay/service request intake, experiment orchestration, scheduling and capacity management, and work assignment across core labs.

+ Partner with core lab scientific and operational leadership to translate assay requirements, fitness-for-purpose criteria, and experimental variables into structured, validated requests and executable workflows.

+ Design and evolve intelligent intake experiences that ensure completeness of requests upfront, accounting for required metadata, sample readiness, inventory availability, and automation or instrument constraints.

+ Lead the evolution of the end-to-end sample and material lifecycle, including accessioning, derivations and aliquots, chain-of-custody, storage, transfers, and disposition, with complete provenance and persistent identifiers (GUPRIs).

+ Improve LIMS/LES usability and effectiveness for bench scientists and core lab staff by streamlining task flows, reducing manual entry, and supporting instrument-adjacent and automation-aware execution.

+ Ensure seamless integration with ELN (protocols and versions), master data and registries, vocabularies and ontologies, lab automation, and downstream analysis pipelines, stewarding consistent APIs, events, and versioned data contracts.

+ Lead cross-functional teams (engineering, UX, scientific SMEs, analysts) through discovery, delivery, and adoption with clear OKRs, release planning, and change management in partnership with RDE Office and OCM.

+ Manage stakeholder alignment, risks, and dependencies across research, informatics, and operations, maintaining a balanced backlog across near-term lab needs and foundational platform capabilities.

+ Ensure solutions meet Roche standards for data quality, access control, security, compliance, and validation in a regulated research environment.

+ Build strong partnerships across the Computational Sciences CoE and with external vendors and collaborators supporting core lab technologies.

    Who You Are

In hiring new employees, we look for people who are inspired by our mission and can thrive with the collaborative, thorough, and entrepreneurial spirit of our company culture. Because we know that employees are essential to our success in bringing novel medicines to patients, we are dedicated to remaining an extraordinary place to work and to providing employees with programs, services, and benefits that allow them to bring the best to the organization and to their personal lives.

The ideal candidate will satisfy many of the following requirements:

+ 8+ years of experience in product management or adjacent roles delivering software that supports research labs or core facilities (e.g., LIMS/LES, assay request systems, scheduling/capacity, sample management, or lab automation).

+ Deep understanding of core lab operating models and end-to-end lab services—from request intake and experiment planning through execution and results delivery.

+ Demonstrated expertise in assay metadata, experimental context capture, and sample provenance, with hands-on experience integrating ELNs, registries/master data (e.g., GUPRIs), instruments, automation, and analysis pipelines.

+ Strong fluency in data models, APIs/events, data contracts, validation and quality practices, and change control in complex scientific environments.

+ Proven ability to translate scientific and operational needs into clear product strategy, roadmaps, and measurable outcomes, with strong stakeholder communication and executive presence.

+ A user-centric mindset, with evidence of improving UX in complex, high-throughput lab workflows using data and telemetry to drive iteration.

+ Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, engineering, or a related field; advanced degree or direct lab/core facility experience is strongly preferred.
